"Although hidden, it turns out the balcony was worse now than it was 5 years ago! He and his head carpenter, Dave, did some exploration and they found the root of the problems. They have completely transformed our balcony instead of just replacing the rotten wood! We are confident that the materials and solution used has solved this problem for good! His workmen (NOT day laborers) always arrived before 8:00 am and worked well. They were clean and respectful answering my questions as things progressed. The entire balcony had to be taken down to the studs, then they replaced from ceiling below to new sub-decking, waterproofing, TREX flooring, handrails (reused but expanded), and on and on til finished. It has turned out better than we ever expected and looks amazing including some extra touches we would have never thought of doing! We are thrilled with the results!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Yes, you can hammer a nail into a wall stud. But before you do, it’s important to confirm that you’re actually nailing into a stud—and not wiring, pipes, or ductwork. To check, find a few more studs in the wall, then measure to make sure they’re either 16 or 24 inches apart.

You can use a nail to find ceiling joists, but it’s not as reliable as a stud finder, and you’ll end up with lots of small holes in your ceiling. If the nail hits a joist, you'll feel increased resistance. Mark the spot with a pencil. Repeat this process regularly along the ceiling, 16 or 24 inches apart, until you've mapped out the joist locations.

Ensures proper sealing and alignment, preventing drafts and improving energy efficiency.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.
