"Bill and his crew were on top of the job right from the start. His prices are very reasonable and he doesn't mark up materials which is rare and greatly appreciated. The work was done carefully and of high quality. Bill is very responsive to phone, text and email communication. We are already asking him to quote another project."

"I am very pleased with the work performed by Chad and his crew. Upon the initial visit for the estimate, I knew that I had the right team on the job. Chad had provided a brilliant fix for a concern of mine. The actual installation and repair was superior. Very happy with all of the folks at One Of A Kind Carpenter, Inc."

"Brisana was without a doubt the right choice. Jose reached out to me when I posted the project and was able to come to my home for an estimate the same day. He was professional, approachable and knowledgeable. I had a short deadline because we were expecting house guests less than a week later so he not only brought in his team but rolled up his sleeves and painted himself to get the job done. I picked the wrong color, twice, and they all dealt with the additional work of repainting the same areas without blinking twice. I was never made to feel like it was a burden or a problem. The entire team, Jose, Arturo and Sabrina were professional, efficient and courteous. My husband, son and I were home the entire time and they worked around us and were pleasant and considerate of our space and schedule. The quality of the work was outstanding and meticulous. I was beyond thrilled to find out that Jose is a general contractor as well, so I am looking forward to many more projects together to come. One and done and great quality at a fair price. What can be better than that."

"If there were six stars to choose from, that would be the rating I would give for the service provided. They were efficient, on time, and had a very professional and friendly personality, doing an amazing job repairing my ceiling. I will be using them for future handyman projects!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Yes, using certified lumber and engineered wood products for reduced environmental impact.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
