"If you speak to Joe by phone, he does not come out to the job site to sell you the HVAC unit. When you sign the estimate agreement, make sure he puts every detail of the job you need done, even though you emailed him or text him. The installers are sub-contractors and only go by what Joe tells them. Thus, in our situation, the condenser had to be moved from original location 8', which I text before the estimate was done. That was $675 more on top of estimate. The breakers for the unit were not to code and cost me an additional $450 to hire an electrician. The installers installed the unit knowing that the copper tubing from the inside unit to original copper tubing we had was much bigger and this could ruin our system over time and not function properly. This could have been changed out right then and there with install. This cost me an additional $1,100 after install as installer had to come back. According to the inspector, Iron Air should have paid for the breaker cost."

"If you only have a second to read this review, let me summarize by saying this is a fantastic company who has earned my trust after only one visit. I could not have asked for a better experience from start to finish. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ---------- My wife and I just purchased our first home in June of 2021. The previous owners left everything in great shape, but being an overly cautious person, I decided to hire qualified technicians to inspect and provide feedback for each of our home’s systems. It is difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff from the outright scammers when it comes to choosing a new vendor, especially without the benefit of recommendations. I decided to use Home Advisor to create a baseline and read some reviews before interviewing a few HVAC companies and deciding. The owner, Wesley, called me within 15 minutes of me submitting the form to Home Advisor. He was polite, courteous, and informative in our introductory call, and was able to schedule our preventative maintenance tune up within 48 hours. I gave the technician, Rob, a rundown of our situation on the phone as he headed our way, explaining that I am a new homeowner but I am interested in learning the systems and was wondering if he would be ok with teaching me as he performed the tune-up. This ended up being the best part of the visit, because he FAR EXCEEDED my expectations. He was incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share what he knew. His advice will easily save me the cost of the annual tune-up over time. After thoroughly examining the air handler and giving it a clean bill of health, we squared up and the price of the service visit and parts were exactly as previously quoted and agreed, and totally reasonable. No fluff charges, no additional fees, just exactly what I expected. Wesley/Rob - if you get a chance to read this, thank you so much for your service. I am glad to be entering a working relationship with a trustworthy HVAC company. See you next year!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, ventless portable air conditioners exist, and not all standard portable air conditioners must be vented through a window.

Ventless portable units, often called evaporative coolers, do not have exhaust hoses. They use a water reservoir and a cooling pad to add moisture to the air, making it feel cooler. These units work best in dry climates because humid areas cannot absorb much additional moisture.

For standard portable air conditioners that do require venting, a window is not the only option; they can also be vented through a door, wall, or ceiling. However, it is essential to vent these units properly. Running a standard portable AC without venting it is counterproductive because it needs to expel heat to cool the room. Failing to do so will only increase the room's temperature.

Most HVAC service calls include diagnostic fees, which could include checking on a specific issue you’re experiencing or running through a routine inspection checklist. If you called for a particular problem, the service call will also include an estimate to fix the issue, including materials and labor. Depending on your HVAC technician and the service you requested, you might also get a general inspection of your system components to ensure everything is working as intended.

As a general rule, you should have your HVAC system professionally serviced at least once a year, though it's best to follow the manufacturer's specific recommendations. Many experts suggest twice-yearly maintenance: once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system. This is especially recommended for older units, systems with recurring issues, or heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling. Regular service, which can cost between $100 and $550, keeps the system running efficiently, helps prevent costly future repairs, and saves money on utility bills.

While personal preferences widely vary, sleep experts say the best temperature for sleeping is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit rather than 78. If you do choose to sleep with your AC unit tuned to 78 degrees, you might want to use only a sheet or light blanket rather than a comforter. You might also consider installing a window unit in your bedroom so that you can be cooler in bed without wasting energy cooling the whole house.

A home AC unit provides anywhere from one-half to five tons of cooling and requires approximately two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling. At approximately five to 10 minutes to fill one pound of refrigerant, a home that requires three tons of cooling will take about six to 12 pounds of refrigerant and approximately 30 minutes to two hours to completely recharge the unit.
