"I have lived in Florida for 35 years and my original popcorn ceiling in the garage was coming apart due to the heat. I contacted Guzman Drywall and in 15 minutes got a call from Mr Guzman who came over to my home took measurements and came out after the current job he was on. They worked 8 hours straight and the ceiling looked like when I first moved into my hom minus the popcorn look. Great Company Reasonable Pricing and First Class Results. Small jobs welcome

"The only criticism is that they wore their shoes in the house without booties and tracked some dirt and mud in on our carpet. Also, they left dirt in the bathtub they had stepped into to clean some windows. I pointed this out to the â bossâ and he wiped the tub out, but we had to vacuum our carpet."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

On average, repairing a ceiling costs anywhere from $450 to $1,750. However, there are many variables that can impact the price of this project. For example, the type of ceiling material, type and extent of the damage, and local labor rates all affect your costs. Holes and cracks are less expensive to fix, while structural issues and water damage are pricier problems.

Most handy homeowners can tackle removing texture from unpainted walls. Removing texture from painted walls is a bit trickier. Paint acts as a sealant, so you can’t soften the texture with water. Instead, you’ll have to add a layer of drywall compound known as a skim coat. This process is messy and takes some practice.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

The average popcorn ceiling removal costs around $2,000, but prices can range from $950 to $3,100, depending on the size, accessibility, and whether or not there’s asbestos or lead paint.

We don’t recommend DIYing this project to save money, but you can DIY the prep work to speed things up. Consider removing furniture, ceiling lights, and other fixtures before the workers arrive on site. To be extra helpful, cover any remaining belongings with plastic tarps and secure them with tape.

The timeline varies from a few hours to two days, depending on room size, texture complexity, and removal difficulty.
