"We have had Nick from Destiny Electric over for electrical work multiple times in the past few years, to include a couple of minor issues (GFCI outlet failure), as well as adding electrical boxes/switches on a DIY bathroom model we did. Most recently (03/2020), Nick came out and installed new breakers and ran new wire to an electric tankless water heater we were installing while a plumbing company was re-piping our house. Nick was prompt, professional, courteous and stayed until just before 6:00 PM on a Friday to make sure it was ready for the plumbers the following Monday. The water heater works flawlessly, and Nick again did a very clean and thorough job with the intstall."

"They installed a whole-house generator. Years ago, someone told me The most important part of a home generator is being able to get service They did everything: pulled permits, installed the generator, installed the electrical change over panel, and provide annual preventative maintenance. They are 5 Star!"

"Simply Impressed! The electrician that came out to my home went the extra mile to meet our needs. We had a difficult panel addition to our garage with a couple of curve balls thrown at us. The electrician stayed at our home for 10 hours to complete a tough job. He was courteous and authentic in his recommendations. The price didn't change as he discovered unforeseen challenges. Its hard to find good contractors. I think we found a great one. Our family will be using Arnett for all my Electrical, AC and Plumbing needs as long as I live in St. Johns."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Leaving lights on raises the electric bill, but not as much as having high-wattage light bulbs. The best way to save on electric costs is to swap your light bulbs to LED or CFL bulbs that use far fewer watts. You can also use smart lights and light switches to control usage via a smartphone or voice-controlled device.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

Yes. You should always turn off the power to the work area before beginning, use a voltage tester to ensure it’s off, and wear protective gear, such as insulated gloves or safety glasses, to prevent risk of injury. Proper wiring and grounding techniques are also necessary to make sure the job is done right the first time and won’t harm any future homeowners.

Yes, many remodels include electrical upgrades for lighting, outlets, or charging stations. Confirm with your contractor.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.
