"We have had Nick from Destiny Electric over for electrical work multiple times in the past few years, to include a couple of minor issues (GFCI outlet failure), as well as adding electrical boxes/switches on a DIY bathroom model we did. Most recently (03/2020), Nick came out and installed new breakers and ran new wire to an electric tankless water heater we were installing while a plumbing company was re-piping our house. Nick was prompt, professional, courteous and stayed until just before 6:00 PM on a Friday to make sure it was ready for the plumbers the following Monday. The water heater works flawlessly, and Nick again did a very clean and thorough job with the intstall."

"They installed a whole-house generator. Years ago, someone told me The most important part of a home generator is being able to get service They did everything: pulled permits, installed the generator, installed the electrical change over panel, and provide annual preventative maintenance. "Simply Impressed! The electrician that came out to my home went the extra mile to meet our needs. We had a difficult panel addition to our garage with a couple of curve balls thrown at us. The electrician stayed at our home for 10 hours to complete a tough job. He was courteous and authentic in his recommendations. The price didn't change as he discovered unforeseen challenges. Its hard to find good contractors. I think we found a great one. Our family will be using Arnett for all my Electrical, AC and Plumbing needs as long as I live in St. Johns."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You should never plug a normal 120v appliance into a special 240v outlet, as it can quickly burn out the appliance. This will cause irreparable damage to the appliance and, in worse case scenarios, cause damage to your circuit breaker. Check your appliance’s rating before plugging it into a 220v outlet to avoid electrical disaster.

Wiring a light switch wrong can cause a fire if the incorrect wiring causes arcing, meaning the current jumps uncontrolled from one conductor to another. Loose wires or worn wires that are not repaired or replaced can cause arcing. If you’re not 100% sure you can do the job safely, don’t attempt to wire a light switch on your own.

A bigger breaker alone probably won’t fix your problem of frequent tripping. But if you upgrade an electrical circuit to a higher amp rating, or upgrade your breaker box to handle more amps, it could solve your tripping problems. Consult a qualified electrician about the best course of action.

You can twist the wires before using a wire nut, but it’s not necessary. Electricians often twist wires before using a wire nut, which can help secure the connection and enhance electrical contact between wires. You can decide whether or not to twist the wires beforehand, or consult a local electrician if you need  professional opinion.

While most electrical items can be plugged into a GFCI outlet, some appliances with internal or stationary motors, such as refrigerators, vent fans, and fluorescent lighting, can cause nuisance tripping. This happens because they experience a small, normal amount of current leakage, which can cause the GFCI to trip even when the appliance is working correctly. Although this is not a safety hazard, it can be inconvenient and may cause the GFCI outlet to wear out faster. For this reason, it is often better to plug these types of appliances into a standard outlet. Additionally, electrical circuits over 100 feet long can sometimes cause tripping. Some appliances, like hair dryers, have their own built-in GFCI protection, so connecting them to a standard outlet is fine.
