"Hired David to replace front door lock set with new Schlage with touchpad for locking and unlocking the door. I knew the door/door jamb needed adjusting since the deadbolt has to move freely in-order for the motor and my old deadbolt did not. David showed up a little early for our appointment and did a great job. He did have to adjust the door jamb deadbolt plate and despite the fact the jamb had already had some serious work/patching, he was able to install perfectly! I've found my "go-to" locksmith for any other lock work."

"Knowledgeable, thorough, timely, detailed, passionate are how we would describe Bobby, his work ethic and skill at being a locksmith. Not to mention he holds the highest level of integrity. When our new locks posed a problem in finding keys that would work, he took ownership of the challenge working over 2 weekends together job done. Highly recommend Bobby and Gorilla Lock!"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Rekeying door locks yourself costs a fraction of what you would expect to pay a locksmith. On average, it costs between $50 to $100 to hire a local locksmith to rekey your house, though labor costs may vary based on where you live. For a DIY solution, you can expect to spend $11 to $25 on a rekeying kit.

Yes, you should always change your locks after buying a house. Do so as soon as possible after you move in. Otherwise, you won’t know who has working keys to the property, whether they’re spare keys or otherwise. If an intruder gains access to your house with a key, it may not be covered under your homeowners insurance.

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes. The same goes for manual models.

Some find smart locks the safest option because it’s harder to manipulate codes without access to your phone. But it’s possible to get hacked even then. Consider installing an extended security system, like door and window alarms or surveillance cameras, to enhance security.

Many insurance providers offer policy discounts when adding security features to your home. The best way to find out if new locks will reduce your premium is to simply ask your agent.
