It’s usually better to repair old furniture because older pieces tend to be made out of hardwood, like oak and maple, whereas newer furniture is more often made out of plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and other less durable materials. Stay away from using window cleaners and other harsh cleaning solutions on antique wood—or any wood in your home for that matter. The pH of the cleaners can break down the finish and permanently damage and stain the wood below. If you recently splashed paint on the wrong area of a wooden object, remove it with a solvent or caustic paint stripper. You can then reapply the wax or polish afterwards, but try to use a much smaller amount and wipe away any excess.
