"Hi All, We just used American Junk Removal to gut our bathrooms and haul away all of our appliances, carpets and other chaos in our home gut renovation. Adam Chop (owner) and his team could NOT have been more professional. They arrived on time, were completely professional, COVID aware and compliant and we would recommend them without reservation for any "junk removal" or demo needs you may have. They did not ask us to share or promote them, but I was so impressed with their service and professionalism combined with the fact that they were HALF of what our contractor quoted us for the same job - that I needed to share their services. "Mike and his crew were wonderful to work with. They were professional and always communicative, worked very neatly and executed this project very well. And they were very courteous to say the least. I ended up rehiring for a large fence removal. He also did some hauling of debris just before my house sold and went the extra mile and taking an old shelf out of the basement."

"Two young men took out an old shack that was under my deck. Inside it was an old lawn mower and other pieces of junk. I was surprised by the cost but it was hot outside and they were pleasant and professional."

Hauling questions, answered by experts

The cost for junk removal is $240 on average, but prices can range from $60 to $600. Your total price largely depends on the items you’re having removed. Certain appliances, like window air conditioners, range from $75 to $90 to remove. However, more oversized items, like hot tubs, fall on the expensive side of the range, costing between $200 and $600 for removal. You should also consider the amount and weight of your junk, with most junk removal companies requiring a minimum of 2 cubic yards.

Many recycling centers will not recycle Styrofoam because it is very difficult to return to its base form. Additionally, many recycling facilities do not have the proper equipment to compact or densify recycled polystyrene foam into new foam blocks. Ultimately, the entire process for recycling polystyrene foam is expensive and takes a lot of time.

If you have a large area of brush and vegetation to clear, forestry mulching may be the best option. This method works well for relatively flat areas that don’t have many large rocks or mature trees to clear. Forestry mulching is a relatively quick process that improves soil health, reduces fire risk, and leaves behind usable mulch.

You cannot put anything you want into a rented dumpster, as there are significant restrictions on certain items.

Generally allowed items include:

  • Household Junk: Furniture, old linens, carpets, toys, small appliances, and excess trash.

  • Construction & Yard Debris: Wood, yard debris, roofing materials, old finishes, and other construction waste.

Commonly prohibited items include:

  • Hazardous Materials: Toxic waste, medical waste, dangerous chemicals, items with lead paint, and asbestos.

  • Flammables: Gasoline, oil, and fuel.

  • Specific Banned Items: Paint cans, electronics, batteries, tires, refrigerators, and hot water tanks.

Because rules can vary, you should always check with your specific dumpster rental company for their guidelines if you are unsure about an item.

The majority of general contractors include junk and trash removal in their contracts, but services vary. As the homeowner, you may need to manage tricky items on your own, such as disposing of laminate flooring in an eco-conscious way or by arranging for appliance pickup with your local waste management service.
