"I needed quick service on a 45 year old hot water boiler in a 1938 house I recently purchased.  While I could get the pilot light lit, nothing I did could get the boiler to fire (water was circulating).
On Wednesday I contacted Pelletier Mechanical as Gary (the owner) had been out giving me estimates on the various repairs and modifications I wanted to make.  While Gary was out of the office training (again), Laura his admin arranged for Bill to come out on Friday.  She provided an estimated cost (right on) and a 2 hour window.
Bill showed up on time and after a brief discussion get right to work.  Bill spent about 15 mins. systematically determining why the flame would not light.  He discovered that there the gas was not making it to the main control valve.  He reset the safety shut off valve and the problem was solved.  He then checked all the radiators to make sure that hot water was making it through out the house.  After we determined that the upstairs radiators were not getting hot, Bill checked the water pressure and determined that the pressure was insufficient to fill the upstairs radiators in "real  time".  He suggested that the culprit was the 45 year old water valve and pressure release valve which being cast iron tend to corrode and clog in time.  He proposed a replacement solution and priced it out, and offered to pick up the parts and replace the valves that afternoon.  I decided to wait a few weeks so I could consider replacing the entire boiler.
While we were waiting on the boiler to come up to heat, Bill and I walked through the basement looking at the existing plumbing, tracing the water flow path and discussing the possibility of replacing the hot water tank with a tankless unit. (The hot water run is about 60-65 feet from HW tank to kitchen, bathrooms, etc.)  Bill, like Gary, is knowledgeable and informative.
I will have Pelletier Mechanical  back to do more work on the house."

"They were terrific.  They are a little bit high price but they come.  Like for example, everybody was home for thanksgiving, the house was full of people and I put the turkey about three o’clock in the morning or four something like that, and the house was freezing.  I called them, the people even got up and the problem was solved.  They come and clean your furnace for you.  I have so much confidence in them because they come."

"After my initial call, representative Pat came to see exactly what we wanted done.  Since we did not know all their options he suggested that the owner Mike come to discuss all the Heating and Air conditioning options for us and the prices.  Mike came and we decided on the mini splits because they were easy to install with only 3 days of disruption to our normal living schedule and they were far less expensive to either hot water heat, which require installing copper pipes in every room and a plumber to do the work and a duct system of delivering forced hot air  to all the rooms with an oil furnace.
We asked that the work start on the 15th of July and it did.  Mike thought it could take three days since the daily temperature was in the 90's but they completed it in two days and left everything clean and orderly.  They did have to cut down some of our foundation plants to make room for the condensers which sit on the ground.
The tubes from the mini splits are run through the walls to the condensers outside and covered with a tube that looks like a gutter drain.  These are on two sides of the house and do look a bit unorthodox on my rough sawn cedar home but I will get use to them or paint them to match the grey stain on the house.  This is why I rated Quality  only good for I have no idea how all these materials rate to other systems and how they will hold up.  Time will tell.
We were able to use them immediately when the installation was completed on the 16th for air conditioning.  Since they work on the same system for heat we only have to change the mode on the remote to Heat and it starts heating the house instead of cooling it.
I had no idea  what a heating and AC installation would cost so I think it is a bit expensive  but I have learned it is far cheaper than other systems especially since my house was built in 1976 with electric baseboard heating which cost a fortune to run in the winter since two upstairs rooms have 18 foot high ceilings.  I have been told this new system will save at least 40 to 50% on electric costs.  I will be keeping track immediately to see if this is true now with the AC system.  If it does I will change my price rating to excellent.

"They arrived on time and were very careful with the work areas. it's been 18 months and everything works flawlessly. The only issue i had was that they sent 2 workers and the second worker did nothing but watch the entire time. Not sure if we were charged for having a second worker. But we felt the price was a little higher that past jobs from other companies. But the work and customer service was an A+."

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

Hydronic and standard electric baseboard heaters differ in how they operate, their cost, and their performance. Standard convection heaters use electric coils to heat the air directly, while hydronic heaters warm a contained liquid like water or oil, which then radiates heat into the room.

In terms of cost and efficiency, hydronic heaters usually have a higher upfront price but are more energy-efficient and cheaper to run over time. This is because the heated liquid retains warmth, allowing the heater to continue providing heat for a while after the thermostat turns it off. In contrast, electric heaters provide heat more quickly but are less efficient.

Ultimately, the better choice depends on your priorities. If you need a room to heat up fast and have a lower initial budget, an electric heater might be suitable. If long-term energy savings are more important and you don't mind a slower heat-up time, a hydronic heater is likely the better option.

While you’ll pay more upfront for a brand-new HVAC unit, you can save money in the long run. Here’s how to save on your new HVAC system:

  • When purchasing a high-efficiency system, your energy bills will be lower in the future.

  • You may be eligible for special offers from your local energy company.

  • Depending on the system, you may be eligible for HVAC rebates and tax credits.

  • Choose to replace your air conditioning unit and furnace simultaneously to save on labor and installation costs.

Professionals can recommend efficient layouts or appliances and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The absence of heating or hot water, unusual noises like banging or gurgling, and visible water leakage are key signs. Abnormal boiler pressure, flame irregularities (for gas boilers), or pilot light issues may also signal trouble. Frequent cycling, soot or staining, and unusual odors, particularly gas-like smells, should not be ignored. Modern boilers often display error codes or lockout mode upon detecting issues. Uneven heating across radiators and rising energy bills without increased usage can further point to problems. Prompt attention to these signs is essential to prevent further damage and ensure safety.

Many HVAC companies offer free quotes and free estimates for repairs and new HVAC systems. Others offer low-cost quotes or apply the cost of the estimates or diagnostics to your final bill if you hire them. Be aware that some companies advertise free HVAC quotes and recoup the costs by charging more for their services. Free HVAC quotes are never truly free—they cost the company time and effort—so be a good customer. Also understand that you may end up paying for free quotes in another way if you don’t hire a reputable company.
