"Great results from waterproofing. Turned my spring flooding anxiety to calm. As humidity rose in summer, I put in a small dehumidifier. Made basement noisy as it struggled to dry and produced a lot of heat. As temperatures rose to about 83 down there and the humidity rose to over 68%, I had same people put in a whole basement commercial-grade dehumidifier. The small unit dropped the humidity to around 50% in less than an hour. Incredible performance and have me peace of mind and peace and quiet downstairs. Temperature dropped gas as well. Weel worth the price to save my most expensive investment."

"Nixon was amazing. I never have good experiences with handymen but he was able to fix my front door, weatherproof my doors, and fix my dehumidifier basement issue that have been huge issues before now. He’s reliable and does a great job. Highly recommend!"

"Flooding in our basement has been a recurring problem over the years. We’ve had various companies do work for us but they failed to keep our basement dry for longer than a few months at a time and only did a semi okay job. That all changed when we hired Empire Construction Waterproofing. Chris gave me a very reasonable price for the size of our project. They had a team down there starting to work almost right away! They were incredibly professional and worked very efficiently. Once they were done they left the space in great condition. My husband and I were very satisfied with the project. The results went above and beyond our expectations, the quality was unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. It was such a pleasure working with Chris and Empire Construction Waterproofing. I have recommended them to all of my friends and family. If you’re having basement issues definitely give them a call."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, outside leaks can easily cause damage to your home if you don’t have waterproofing measures in place. Regularly check your property for signs of a leak, ensure your home’s landscaping is at least at a 5% slope, your basement windows are sealed, and you have an aligned gutter system to catch rainwater.

A sewage smell in your crawl space is usually from a damaged or clogged pipe leaking sewer gasses or actual sewage underneath your home, but there are some other common causes. Moisture, from poor or damaged encapsulation or a malfunctioning sump pump, can harbor mold and bacteria, causing a musty smell. Pests can also get stuck in your crawl space and die, which causes a sewage-like odor.

As the first layer of water protection for your roof deck and the building materials below, underlayment is designed to prevent water damage, so it’s okay if it gets wet. However, you shouldn’t rely solely on underlayment for protection. If rain interrupts your roof project and you have all of the underlayment down, you’ll likely be fine, but you should install shingles over that layer as soon as possible, as long-term exposure can lead to water damage.

Most people consider a French drain to be one of the most effective solutions for foundation leaks, but it’s not always a standalone solution. French drains will help keep water away from your foundation to reduce the risk of leaking and structural damage from soil expansion, but depending on your foundation type and location, you might need other systems or techniques—like soil gradation and gutter and leader installation—to resolve the underlying problem.

The cost of basement waterproofing is $4,950 for the average homeowner. However, you could end up paying between $600 and $14,000, depending on factors like basement size, waterproofing method, and the region you live in.

If you live in an area with heavy rainfall, you might be paying more for waterproofing than if you lived somewhere drier since waterproofing contractors would be in high demand. Likewise, a 500-foot basement costs between $2,500 and $5,000 to waterproof, but that price rises significantly for a larger basement.
