United We Stand LLC, Fully licensed and insured commercial and residential contractor in both Rhode Island and Connecticut. CT NHC- 011983, CT HIC- 615687, RI LIC-38381

"Bill's roofing job was a disaster. He wasn't present during installation, despite claiming otherwise. Soon after, I noticed mold, sagging, and water damage. He repeatedly dismissed my concerns until I pushed him to check, but he insisted there were no issues. A chimney professional he recommended found serious problems—spongy spots, old flashing, and improper installation. Ten other roofing companies confirmed the same issues, including incorrect flashing, a broken ridge vent, and inadequate materials. Bill refused to acknowledge the problems, leaving us with a faulty roof. Avoid at all costs."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Not all wood that’s been softened by termites needs to be replaced. You may be able to salvage wood using a wood hardener instead of replacing beams. However, you’ll need to hire a structural engineer to assess the damage and the overall stability of the wood before making a replacement plan.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Regular sealing, repainting, and checking for wood rot or pest infestations help maintain longevity.
