Small jobs welcome

"Juliano was very responsive and receptive of ideas I had for the project. The work done turned out the way I wanted and was able to do it within my price range. The only thing I would say needs improvement is the cleanup afterwards. There was more saw dust leftover than I anticipated. Regardless, I would recommend and would hire again for further projects."

"Timber did a good job painting the areas requested and was very professional in his work ethic and skill. He also did small repairs to hallway wall. Scheduling was a bit sketchy, but he was very eager to please. Rating would have been higher but I saw the same deal from the company advertised on AL for approx. $100 lower in price shortly after my purchase, I was not pleased knowing others had received a better deal than I had. I'm not sure whether this was an Angie's List scheme or something agreed to by the business. Either way, I'm a bit skeptical to hire through Angie's List after this occurred. The business owner told me that he had not agreed with AL to the lesser advertised price. So all in all, pleased with the work completed, but not at all with the advertising."

"Listen to us when we say that these guys are the best. Peter isn’t just a contractor, he’s a visionary, and he quickly becomes a friend. Thanks to his patience, dedication, and guidance, our home was transformed into more than we could have imagined. These days, you can barely get contractors to return calls and finish projects, Peter and his team are the opposite. He was there to walk us through everything from start to finish, and helped us make sound decisions along the way. We trust him implicitly, and we just hope he’ll be available to work with us on our future projects :) Before and after photos to come. We can’t thank you enough, Lux-Windoors!!"

"Coming from a woman's point of view I have had 3 contractors prior to Frank, and was very apprehensive hiring another contractor. Frank has great integrity, lets you know upfront the time frame for the project, and finishes on time with great results. Frank gets straight to the point, he has amazing workers. Not only have I gained an amazing contractor I gained an amazing friend.."

Customers say: Quick response

"I hired Adam and his team to frame and install my new kitchen including framing out a new pantry in a very difficult space as well as install a slider and reconfigure some walls. I am so pleased with the result. His attention to detail and work ethic are a rare find. I would recommend anyone needing any carpentry, framing, windows and doors work to contact him, you will not be disappointed."

"We would highly recommend Jeff for any renovation project. We hired him for a major home remodel, including a complete gut and build-out of our second floor, relocation of our kitchen and dining room on the first floor, new roof, siding, windows, and addition to our deck. Jeff was fair, honest, and personable from start to finish and offered suggestions throughout the project on both functionality and cost savings. We were on a time crunch with a baby on the way, and when the baby came a month early in the middle of the remodel, Jeff and his team worked tirelessly to get the job done. He has been a pleasure to work with during an otherwise very stressful time and we will definitely reach out to him for future projects. Thanks Jeff!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
