"Kurt did a great job and was very efficient. He was able to repair all rot, and at a fraction of the cost of several other estimates. He repaired several window frames and replaced some of the baseboards. I was worried about having to replace siding, but only one small piece had to be replaced. Kurt is a great contractor and is very reliable and honest. We are planning to hire him to do more work on the back of our house."

"Very well!! Brian did a great job installing 4 custom blinds in my home. Brian measured the rest of our widows and offered sound advice on how to accurately order blinds for them. I highly recommend Brian for his handyman services."

"Gove Restoration completed a few very different projects at my mother’s house in Newington. First, they replaced 40 year old back steps and did a full exterior paint job of shingles and shudders on the house and other buildings in the backyard. Inside the house, they updated her 60 year old bathroom including replacing the bathtub with a walk in shower safe for use of an 80 year old. My mother and the rest of the family are so happy with the results which shows the breadth of work that they can do. Matt Gove made the process so easy everyone by carefully outlining the intended scope of work, regularly updating us on progress, and following through on all commitments. All of the members of Matt’s team who worked on the various projects at my mother’s house treated her with kindness and consideration such that she never felt uncomfortable with anyone who came to the house. This was a huge relief for me since I live out of state and knew that she would be home alone during the work. I couldn’t recommend Gove Restoration more for any kind of contracting work!"

"Agile Construction was very professional. They asked what needed to get done and then came in and executed it flawlessly. They were able to answer my questions and explained the work and their methodology. They came to repair my window sill. And it looks way better than before."

"Timber did a good job painting the areas requested and was very professional in his work ethic and skill. He also did small repairs to hallway wall. Scheduling was a bit sketchy, but he was very eager to please. Rating would have been higher but I saw the same deal from the company advertised on AL for approx. $100 lower in price shortly after my purchase, I was not pleased knowing others had received a better deal than I had. I'm not sure whether this was an Angie's List scheme or something agreed to by the business. Either way, I'm a bit skeptical to hire through Angie's List after this occurred. The business owner told me that he had not agreed with AL to the lesser advertised price. So all in all, pleased with the work completed, but not at all with the advertising."

"Whitcolm Holmes did an amazing job on my basement renovation; they worked closely with me, listening to my wants and needs, and completed the renovation within my expected timeframe. I will certainly use them again for future projects and happy to refer them to friends and family."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.
