"I was very pleased with the carpentry work Kurt did in the wood siding of my house. He replaced a whole section of cedar siding and replace various rotting siding. He installed a frieze board and fixed some rotten siding on a dormer along with other various siding and window trims work The quality of work was excellent and very professional Good quality craftmanship and high work ethics coupled with good communication and very friendly. He provides good advise on what to do and always putting the customer first. He is one of the best carpentry contractor and I definitely recommend him and will call him again for all my future carpentry siding work."

"Nixon provides great service in a timely manner. He and his crew were efficient, polite and respectful of the areas they worked in. They performed carpentry work that was excellent and quickly solved a roofing and sealing/painting issue for me. Nixon was responsive by phone and showed up when he said he was going to each time. His pricing was a bit on the high side and you get what you pay for. I will definitely be calling on Nixon and his crew again for future work."

"Brian performed an excellent job on our doors. He arrived when he said he would, charged us what he estimated the job would cost, and most important, fixed the doors extremely well."

"Once again, we could not be more pleased with the work that Matt and his sub-contractors did for us. Just as we were totally satisfied with Gove's painting of our 18th century home a couple years ago, we were very impressed with theirwork on rebuilding the front of our 100-year old carriage-style garage and installing overhead doors. Matt was extremely helpful in describing options to us, helping us determine the best approach for functionality, aesthetics, and price. What was most impressive was his close coordination and management of the various workers who completed carpentry and electrical work. He stopped over frequently to oversee the work and ensured that materials arrived on time and work was completed on schedule. With Gove, a client doesn't have to choose among quality, speed, service, price - you get it all. Matt and his brother (as well as his dad) are the best at what they do - they are our go-to people whenever our house needs work."

"Agile Construction was very professional. They asked what needed to get done and then came in and executed it flawlessly. They were able to answer my questions and explained the work and their methodology. They came to repair my window sill. And it looks way better than before."

"Owner, Noah Garvey and team was on the job every day replacing old deck and with multiple repair & paint projects around on the house - even through a stint of 90 degree weather. Excellent work. I found Noah professional, knowledgeable and importantly, honest, fair and accommodating to my needs. Definitely a good hire."

"Fantastic Service! I can't say enough about this great company. Our house was a dull brown, the wood was rotting in many places and had carpenter ants, carpenter bees, and some of the slats were falling off. Now our home is a beautiful midnight blue with stunning white trim! I can't believe the transformation! These guys did a great job. Jeremy went above and beyond to find us a great deal on a front door and worked with our timing to complete the whole siding project. When they working on the south side of my house, they discovered that one of my windows was rotted out. Jeremy made several calls and was able to locate a replacement that day. Jeremy knew we were on a tight budget, so he worked us to find a solution to fit our home while still using a high-quality product. The workers were fast, efficient, and professional. I couldn't believe how they were willing to work in frigid temperatures to complete the project in a timely manner. We are extremely pleased with the results. Though the prices seemed higher at first than some of the bids we received, we recognized the true value of what we were getting. In the end, Jeremys prices were comparable to some of the quotes we got that were for a lower quality product."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.
