"Kurt did an excellent job, saving our windows from needing full replacement. Less experienced carpenters turned down the job as the rot was extensive. Kurt left them looking better than when we purchased the house. He communicated well about the work and always let me know when he'd be arriving. He was also just a really nice person to have around for a long and tedious job -- friendly and pleasant, working hard through a heat wave. I recommend him without hesitation."

"This company is terrific! They came out to see and then do our project quickly, efficiently and for a fair price. They explained everything in layman’s terms and they were pleasant to be around and to have in my home. I would highly recommend!"

"Very well!! Brian did a great job installing 4 custom blinds in my home. Brian measured the rest of our widows and offered sound advice on how to accurately order blinds for them. I highly recommend Brian for his handyman services."

"This was a commercial building that was abandoned and needed ALOT of miscellaneous work and finishing including siding, painting, finish work, decking, etc, etc, etc, Kenny and his crew did a FANTASTIC job at a good price and added a TON of value to me!!!!! I hired him for one job that he did well. Then the painting when the other contractor was fired. Then had him remodel my kitchen and house. I am getting ready to hire him again. I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T SAY ALL THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE LIKE FEW OTHERS AND THIS WILL MAKE HIM UNAVAILABLE FOR ME BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL HIRE HIM."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Building involves setting foundation posts, framing with durable wood, adding roofing support, and protecting from elements with water-resistant finishes.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.
