"Hillcrest replaced my central air conditioner. Very happy with the work they did. They even painted the cover over the exterior pipes to match my siding. Their price was fair and most importantly they did not try to pressure me into buying stuff I don't need."

"Simply the best contractor in CT for home addition. It wasn't easy to pick a contractor to put a 2nd floor addition. There are plenty to chose from online. However, Mr. Casali stuck out because of the volume of searched online, his website and the positive reviews. I called for a free estimate and was impressed that someone came out that same day to look at my job. I was given an estimate within a few days and a promise that work would start in 2 weeks if I signed the contract. The price wasn't the cheapest or the most expensive. But the crew was clean, professional, on time, and didn't play games with adding extra costs. The end result was rather impressive. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking to get work done on their home the right way."

"Connecticut Basement Systems prides themselves on their superior customer service, and they really live up to that. Their communication, quality of products and service, and attentiveness to customer needs is unsurpassed. Here are a couple of examples of how they go the extra mile for a satisfied customer: They installed their basement drainage system around my existing heating oil tank, but as I'm planning to convert away from oil this summer, they offered to come back AT NO EXTRA CHARGE once the tank is removed, to reroute the drainage system. Also, I was scheduled for a 3-day project, which included the replacement of some flooring in my basement. On the day the project began, we reconsidered the need for the flooring, and asked if we could cancel that portion of the job. They could not have been more accommodating to that adjustment, and made the change with no questions asked or negative attitude, even though it significantly lowered the price of the project and eliminated a whole day of scheduled work on 2-days' notice. That sort of total customer dedication is rare. I recommend them highly."

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

It is technically possible to draw your own blueprints, but the process is extremely involved and really demands help from an expert. A professional architect has an understanding of design elements, interior design, the functionality of different rooms in a home, and how everything from furniture, outlets, and light switches should be laid out to serve you and your family best. Hiring an architect for blueprints can get expensive, but it’s the most responsible way to begin a new construction project. If you’re keen on DIYing, you could consider starting the process and then having a professional take over.

A pool builder can advise you on the best design for your property and vision, and can walk you through the process from design to a swim-ready pool. Knowing which questions to ask a pool builder can help ensure you choose the right person for the job.

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

Costs depend on desk size, labor, included features like drawers or motorized height adjustments, and required wall anchoring.

You have three options in terms of professionals who can draw up blueprints: a draftsperson, an architect, or a structural engineer. A draftsperson can sometimes draw up plans for new construction, but they more often work from approved plans for alterations or to provide 3D drawings. Architects are usually the best option for standard residential construction projects. Structural engineers might be necessary for custom home builds or for alterations that could affect your home’s structural integrity. Draftsmen cost the least of the three, followed by architects and then structural engineers.
