"Steven was the absolute best… arrived at the very start of only a two hour window, fixed the problem in about an hour. Very polite and courteous. I called three plumbers and he was the first to call me back and the only one who would give me a ballpark figure over the phone. The others wanted to come out and have a look for $70. even though I accurately described the job in detail. I’m thrilled to have a reliable plumber! A more than satisfied customer, Lora Harrigan"

"This company is excellent! I had several problems at my sister’s home, after she died suddenly. I arrived from FL & called for help. He arrived that morning and went above & beyond to help fix several problems. If I lived in Fairfield County, CT, this would be my go to, first choice plumbing company. Do not hesitate to use All Star Rooter!"

"Well, I called Old Faithful and spoke with Joe. The water tank had been leaking for quite awhile, so it wasn't an emergent situation. We arranged for a time for him to come out for an estimate the following day. What a pleasant & easy to work with guy!! He arrived promptly at the appointed time, assessed the job and gave me an estimate within a day. He does not do regular plumbing & will inform you of such if you need other projects performed. I found the estimate to be very fair and felt very confident that he could do the job. I also requested that he replace the water filter housing so everything would be the same age, being that our water is so hard. He assured me that the tank & other parts would be from a plumbing supply house and not be from the cheaply made stuff available from HD. That was really, really important to me. In the grand scheme of things for essential home items, it doesn't make sense to be penny-wise & pound foolish! The job was completed a week later without exception. He actually even moved the tank over several feet in order to make it more look better and give more room! He was neat, knowledgeable, affable and a pleasure to work with. The job was performed over a month ago and I've had no issues. I would recommend him highly. Good luck!! J"

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

A sewer cleanout typically looks like a white or gray PVC pipe with a removable cap. It's often located either in your yard or basement, depending on your home's plumbing configuration. The cleanout pipe is designed to provide easy access to your sewer system for maintenance and inspections. It may be flush with the ground or slightly elevated, making it distinguishable from other pipes. When you remove the cap, you can access the sewer line directly or determine its direction, which can be helpful when you need to locate your sewer line from your house to the street.

A bit of water in the bowl can help unclog a toilet, especially if you're using a plunger. However, if the bowl is full to the brim, you'll need to strap on gloves and remove some of the wastewater in a cup or container so it doesn't overflow when you try to unblock the pipe. If you're concerned about it filling further, manually close the flapper in the toilet tank or turn off the water supply to the toilet.

A back pressure valve is a control valve used on production vessels, such as separators, treaters, and free water knockouts. The valve holds pressure until a set point is reached, and then releases upstream pressure to reset. Back pressure valves are not safety mechanisms. Instead, they are regulators designed to keep the fluid, gas, or liquid mixture in a system at a certain pressure level to prevent bursts and other incidents.

Meanwhile, a backflow preventer is a safety mechanism that kicks in when the pressure has already failed and contaminated water flows in the reverse direction. Most backflow preventers consist of two one-way valves, or check valves assembled together. This design only allows water to pass through in one direction but not the other.

Yes, you can adjust your well pump pressure relatively easily by yourself. You’ll need to remove the cover from your pressure switch and adjust a nut that controls cut-in pressure. Learn more about how to adjust a well pump pressure switch with a step-by-step guide to setting your water pressure.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.
