"They were a half hour late (it happens, their appointment before mine ran over) but made a point to call me an hour ahead of time informing me that they'd likely be 30-60min late. Very courteous workers, explained what they were doing and answered any questions I had. They informed me that part of the quoted work didn't need to be done and saved me a buck there, and gave me advice on how to maintain the area going forward to prevent the concrete sinking again."

"Installed 7 push piers in two days and was able to raise the foundation of one wall up one inch to level it back with the rest of the house. The crew of Jonathan H, Manuel A and Gerardo T did an efficient and clean job. I was kept informed at every step of the process."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.

Whether you’re installing brick siding over a traditionally-framed home or you’re using genuine brick construction to build, the biggest downside of a brick house is the higher cost you’ll pay for the materials and labor. Real brick construction also means your home build will take longer, as it’s more time-consuming to construct brick walls than it is to frame out your home.

They offer durability, aesthetic appeal, and resistance to weathering compared to concrete or asphalt.

Most of the time, you don’t need to seal brickwork and can save that money for another area of home improvement. But if your brick is cracking or you live in an area with a lot of excess moisture (either in terms of rain or freezes), sealing can extend the lifetime of your home. But, make sure you use a breathable sealant, like siloxane, to allow the moisture to evaporate on its own.
