"It is with the greatest pleasure and respect that I recommend Austin Powers and Electric. We have had flickering lights all over the house and I called one electrician and then signed up with Angi’s List. Five electricians visited and we selected Austin. Between them there was no clear picture of what the problem was. Austin spent a couple of hours early in the week and after a few minutes of work, he was sure he understood the situation. He was totally correct in his work, and saved us a lot of money. He was always available, ready to come over, and very pleasant to work with. He is the absolutely best electrician we could have found."

"Woman who called me to give me more info and schedule was excellent and very friendly, great communication with her. The owner, I believe, who came to look at the job and give me a bid was professional and efficient as were the 3 guys who did the work. There was a 2 hour minimum work window which meant a $200 starting base price. They were done with my two projects (installing the outlet and fixing a hallway light) in less than an hour, so I guess I should have had more projects to get my full money's worth. They did a great job, though."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Most ceiling light fixtures only have a black, white, and green wire, but in some cases, you’ll also find a red wire in the box. This is a second hot wire, like the black wire, and is included for ceiling light kits that have a fan.

GFCI outlets generally need to be replaced every 7 to 15 years, though some may fail in as little as 5 years, depending on usage. It is important to test them regularly. Signs that a GFCI outlet is failing or has reached the end of its lifespan include: no power coming from the outlet, the outlet not resetting when the 'reset' button is pressed, or the outlet not tripping when the 'test' button is pressed. If you notice any of these issues, it is time to replace the outlet, and it's best to contact an electrician to do so.

The cost of fixing faulty wiring depends on the type of repair required. Replacing an electrical service line, for example, can cost up to $500. Rewiring an entire house will cost at least several thousand dollars. Replacing old wiring like knob and tube wiring will be even more expensive, but fortunately that kind of outdated wiring is fairly rare. Always get an estimate from a reliable electrician to learn the cost details.

If there isn’t a C-wire on your thermostat, you can repurpose the G-wire. The G-wire controls the fan independently of the other controls on your thermostat, so the fan-only function won’t work if you decide to go this route.

On average, replacing an electrical breaker panel, such as the Federal Pacific Electrical breaker panel, costs about $1,300. The price range for replacing electrical panels is between $550 and $2,100, depending on your location, the electrical panel’s location, and the extent of the work required to replace the panel. This kind of electrical work is dangerous and should only be done by a licensed electrician.
