"The Diagnostic Guys are our go to for anything electrical. They have done great work updating our light fixtures, adding new lighting (indoor and outdoor) and adding outlets. They are always courteous, prompt and meticulous about the details. Couldn’t be happier with the services they’ve provided for us!"

Customers say: Quick response

"jt was a very comfortable process for me. I had my service panel brought up to code and increase the amps. I had 3 estimates and Cameron was below the closes bid by about $1000.00. it was a very good experience and I will use him again for any other electrical needs as they arise."

"I had an excellent experience with Austin — he called me within 10 minutes of submitting my request on Angi’s List. He arrived at my home within half an hour and got straight to work converting an old cable outlet into a new electrical outlet in my living room. The job was done quickly, cleanly, and exactly as requested. I also asked him to rewire my current outlet so it wouldn’t be controlled by a wall switch, and he handled that with no problem. He was prompt, professional, friendly, and genuinely happy to help — highly recommend!"

Small jobs welcome

"My husband with Alzheimer’s can usually change a light switch but while doing the one in the bathroom couldn’t get it. I put an urgent message on Angie’s list and Terry from Zap electric gave me a call in a few minutes. He came and fixed the switch in 20 minutes. He was knowledgeable and so nice. He gave us a senior discount. A bathroom light is a must and he saved me that day. Please call him of you need any electrical!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Soldering is a reliable and durable way to connect wires, but it isn't the only method. Nowadays, professionals often crimp the connection instead—although this requires a higher degree of skill than soldering.

A ceiling light will usually have two or three wires: black, white, and sometimes green. Black wires are positive, or hot, while white wires are negative, or neutral. The green wire is the grounding wire.

When you’re wiring the light, connect black to black, white to white, and green to the grounding screw.

You can use a double-pole switch for a regular light fixture, but it's unnecessary and won’t be the most efficient choice. A single-pole switch works perfectly for standard lights. Double-pole handle high-power appliances that require both hot wires to be disconnected. Using a single-pole switch for regular lights is more cost-effective, simpler, and more common in residential settings.

Just as fluorescent lights are more efficient than incandescent lights, LED lights are more efficient to run than fluorescent lights. The specifics will vary from product to product, but LED lights are typically twice as efficient as equivalent fluorescent lights. A 13-watt CFL bulb can replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb, but a 6- to 8-watt LED bulb can offer the same amount of brightness. Fluorescent lights offer about 50 lumens per watt, while LEDs offer about 100 lumens per watt. LED light bulbs typically last two to three times as long as CFL bulbs, too.

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.
