"Hired Marco Construction to repair our warping deck that all other companies wanted to rip down. They fixed the warp, installed railing and an animal barrier. Good communication and workers were very respectful throughout the process and they completed it quick!"

"Daniel and the team were professional, considerate, honest and timely with their work. We had over 5 bids for our project which was a large investment and went through a long vetting process. Daniel answered all my questions honestly and provided a consultative approach to the project. We had a concrete pour and a deck rebuild D&D could do both, most contractors could only do the deck and said we needed to outsource the concrete elsewhere. The deck project was done in two weeks and the outcome was better than what I had imagined. The team was very clean and picked up all remnants of the materials, I highly recommend D&D for any deck or patio repair, rebuild, or new build. They are honest and hard working, will definitely give a referral or use for any future projects on our house. Glad I found this team. Small jobs welcome

"Juan has done work for us over several years and we keep asking him to do more! He most recently helped patch holes in our drywall and ceiling, He also repaired our attic hatch, replaced the seal at the bottom of our garage door, installed a storm door, and put in a latch to hold our furnace filter in place. Juan does quality work AND is reasonably priced. He gives free estimates and schedules the work in a timely manner! We found a gem many years ago and will continue to hire him for projects!"

"We hired Matt and the A-Z Remodel and Repair team for our basement remodel, and the experience exceeded our expectations from start to finish. Matt was punctual, professional, and incredibly communicative throughout the entire project. We always knew what was happening and what to expect next. The job site was kept impressively clean and organized every single day, which made living through a remodel far less disruptive than we anticipated. Matt’s attention to detail is outstanding, and it shows in the quality of the finished work. Even when subcontractors were on site, Matt was there alongside them, making sure everything was executed to his standard. The project stayed on schedule, the craftsmanship is excellent, and Matt’s customer-service-first approach made the whole process genuinely enjoyable. We’d hire A-Z Remodel and Repair again without hesitation and recommend them to anyone looking for a contractor who truly cares about doing the job right."

"Daniel was great. Built the deck to a high standard with thoughtful finishes basically on time. Much better than our experience with another local builder."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

In the majority of cases, you don’t need regulatory permission or permits to remove decking components and materials. However, the exception is if you live in or near a wildlife conservation area, which could require permits and consent prior to beginning the demolition. Check with a local regulatory agency for more information.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.
