"Daniel and the team were professional, considerate, honest and timely with their work. We had over 5 bids for our project which was a large investment and went through a long vetting process. Daniel answered all my questions honestly and provided a consultative approach to the project. We had a concrete pour and a deck rebuild D&D could do both, most contractors could only do the deck and said we needed to outsource the concrete elsewhere. The deck project was done in two weeks and the outcome was better than what I had imagined. The team was very clean and picked up all remnants of the materials, I highly recommend D&D for any deck or patio repair, rebuild, or new build. They are honest and hard working, will definitely give a referral or use for any future projects on our house. Glad I found this team. Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Hangers are one way of attaching stair stringers to a deck. These metal hangers are usually adjustable, allowing you to find the ideal angle for a secure installation. They’re the best choice for installing longer staircases, such as one on a two-story deck, to reduce the load on the deck frame while keeping the stairs stable.

Floating decks are a cost-effective and versatile option, but they come with some compromises. Since they sit on smaller footings instead of being deeply anchored, they’re more likely to shift over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Their low-to-the-ground design makes them more susceptible to moisture buildup and potential water damage.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.
