"I had a lot of caulking that needed done and a board along the front of the house that needed replaced due to rotting. When Marco came to give the bid he explained how he planned on fixing it. He was very detailed regarding the prep work and the painting process. The painting crew did a fantastic job and the end result is amazing. They went above and beyond to make sure things were done properly. I would definitely recommend H & M Painting and would use them again. Thank you all for dealing with my mess!"

"We chose Painting Plus over 3 other companies that we obtained quotes from. Not only was the quote reasonable, but the timing, the professionalism, the package deals of services offered was what made us decide on hiring Painting Plus. The two/three people crew that did our massive garage work was so impressive. Derrick, the rep that came out to quote us was so so kind. The crew member that did the work was also just as kind. I cannot thank them enough for their hard work and dedication. Thank you! Highly recommend!"

"Troy is professional, timely and pleasant. He gives a quote not an estimate. My job took more paint than he anticipated . Troy covered the cost of the extra paint. He has my future business."

"Foothills Painting far exceeded my highest expectations for sprucing up our basement. George and his crew worked their magic turning a dingy space into a pure white ceiling with Alabaster walls and trim. They painted carefully and efficiently all with a keen eye for any places for touch ups. Miles, Rachel, and Ray were team players, each executing their roles in a professional and friendly manner to make our job happen. We will definitely use them again next spring for exterior painting. Thanks Foothills Painting!"

"We needed a couple small jobs for painting and Tony was able to help us. He painted a hallway that had some serious chipping paint and painted our kitchen ceiling and walls. His quality of work was outstanding and price was just right. I would highly recommend Tony."

Painting questions, answered by experts

The best time to stain a fence is when the weather is dry and temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Late spring, early summer, and fall are typically the best seasons for this project. You should avoid staining during very hot weather, like in the middle of summer, or when it is raining. Heat and moisture can cause the stain to dry unevenly. Likewise, if it's too cold, such as in winter or early spring, the stain may not be able to dry fully. Before you start, check the forecast to ensure there will be no rain and low humidity for at least a few days.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

You can weather a new wood fence by applying vinegar with steel wool as a way to fade some of the coloring. You may also find it easier to stain your entire fence a new color instead of trying to get newer fence boards to match an older one.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.
