"Elijah was easy to work with. Very responsive. We had our 25+ year old solid wood cabinets sanded and recoated. He and Jeff did a really good job...exactly what we expected/hoped for. Now they all look like the day they were initially installed!"

"They did not reface cabinets, that that field was not changeable. Chris and his coworker painted our whole condo and installed new flooring in every room. Their workmanship was high quality and their customer service and job management was courteous, professional and efficient. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a high quality result for their project."

Customers say: Quick response

"I recently hired Matt to install a garbage disposal, kitchen faucet and rain showerhead in one of my bathrooms. He expertly installed all and suggested I replace the plastic safety water lines under the kitchen sink with steel braided ones. So I picked them up and he came back and changed them out at no extra charge! Great customer service and reasonably priced. I will definitely be using Matt's handyman services again!"

"Marco and his crews are very experienced and did an excellent job. They are very professional and deliver what they promise. I had areas of the home where the paint was peeling in large areas. They were able to repair and paint those areas and made it all blend in. I would highly recommend them for your project. They are very trustworthy and the high quality workmanship was fantastic. This company is top notch. I am an engineer so I know all about the details. With H&M Painting you get in my opinion the best painting contractor in the area. I will be recommending them to others and you should feel great when you hire them as well."

Cabinet Contractors questions, answered by experts

The Janka Hardness Scale rates wood species according to their hardness levels or density. On the scale, hickory ranks as the most dense hardwood that is common for use in making cabinets. While there are woods that are harder, they're uncommon in cabinetry. Maple, oak, and walnut also rank relatively high on the scale and are excellent for use in cabinetry.

Birch or maple plywoods have tight grain patterns and are dense species that hold up well over time and even in damp environments with proper sealing. These properties make them the most stable plywoods. Oak plywood is also an excellent option. However, care is necessary to ensure oak is well-sealed against moisture to ensure stability.

It's possible to replace lower kitchen cabinets without removing the countertop. However, there are some special considerations to keep in mind. Expect to disassemble the existing cabinets without compromising the countertop's support. You might not be able to reuse the cabinets you remove. Next, you'll have to slightly modify the tops of the new cabinets and install blocking after installation to attach the base to the countertop.

Make sure your shelves are no more than 12 inches deep. Any deeper and it will become hard to access items towards the back of the shelf. Yet, for larger walk-in pantries, homeowners may prefer 15- to 18-inch shelving to make room for larger appliances and cookware.

Whether you install flooring before or after kitchen cabinets depends primarily on the type of flooring you are using. For materials like hardwood, tile, and sheet flooring, the best practice is to install the flooring first. This ensures the cabinets are installed at the correct height and on a stable surface. However, you should not install cabinets on top of floating floors, such as laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). These types of flooring need room to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Placing heavy cabinets on top can restrict this movement, potentially causing the floor to buckle and making the cabinets unstable. For floating floors, install the cabinets first and then lay the flooring up to them. Other reasons to consider installing cabinets before the flooring include saving money on materials (since you won't need flooring under the cabinets) and avoiding potential damage to your new floor during cabinet installation. Additionally, installing cabinets directly on the subfloor might prevent voiding your flooring's warranty.
