The first thing is to consider the main color of your home and determine which colors will complement it. You should place paint samples on your siding and look at them at different times of the day so you can see the way the sun (and shade) affect how they appear. If you’re unhappy with the look of your baseboard heater and want to make it flow seamlessly with your wall color, painting a baseboard heater is possible. Always ensure the heater is off and cooled before you begin this project. Heat-resistant paint isn’t necessary unless your heater is heating above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

In most cases, you have to sand crown molding before painting. This is due to the nature and design of molding. It’s not a flat wall, so uneven surfaces will be immediately noticeable once that paint dries. Sanding down the surface smooths everything out, leading to a satisfactory result. If the trim is already smooth, such as with new crown molding, you can give it a light sand with 120-grit sandpaper.

This depends on the size and design of your door. If your door is on the smaller side and features some unique design elements, go with a brush to ensure you get in those hard-to-reach crevices without painting outside the lines. If you’re painting a large door, like a double door or garage door, and the panels are flat, go with a roller to get the job done quickly. 

Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. This can remove any old paint, gloss, or varnish, without the need to manually sand. Apply the deglosser using a cloth, then wait for the chemical to penetrate through the surface. Once it soaks through, you should be able to wipe away the residue with a towel.
