"The owners, Roger & Mike, are a father & son team who come from several generations of arborists. It is a joy to watch them at work, because caring for trees seems to be their second nature. Aside from their expertise, the thing that will make me call them again is that they were totally up front about their quote. No games. Just an honest quote. Of course, they were quick to respond to my query, and gave me a bid that same day. They were able to do the job the following day. They worked quickly and got my very old Jonathan apple tree in shape in less than an hour. They left no trace, except what I asked them to leave for my compost pile. The depth of tree roots depends on the species. Trees like oaks and maples can have root systems that grow down 20 feet or more. However, trees that grow in shallow soils will have roots that go only a few feet down. Research how your tree species grows in your climate area to estimate root depth.

If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. However, effective transplanting requires six months, careful root pruning, safe transport to the new location, and replanting in prime soil conditions. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.

Many species, especially when well-established, are not fans of transplantation. You’ll need to decide if you want to risk splashing the cash, understanding that transplantation isn’t always successful.
