Customers say: True professional

"We had a fire pit, flagstone and rocks installed to reduce our grass area in the backyard. Masonry D Services, owner Manny and his crew, did an excellent job and completed it on time. Manny was easy to work with and communicated every step of the project. I would definitely use his services again."

"When I booked with GCB Landscaping Service LLC, even confirmed and was assured they would be here, they were a no show, Didn't even bother to call or take my repeated calls. I called David, explained my situation, and he came right over to service me on his day off. Now that is A+++ service!!!"

"Stony Mountain did a great job with our patio. We are very pleased with the finished product. The only issue we had was our project was delayed after our backyard was excavated and prepped which left the space unusable for a week. There could've been better communication regarding the delay but overall we are happy and think the project turned out better than expected."

"We have a 120 year-old brick home that needed tuck point work where some of the original mortar was crumbling. Masterful Masonry was professional and prompt with good communication. Quality of the work was excellent, and I am happy with the price. I would hire them again."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick is the closest choice when seeking to capture the timeless look of stone with a more practical and budget-friendly option. When comparing stone versus brick siding, the price range of $200,000 to $400,000 for average brick home construction is dramatically lower compared to the cost of building a stone home. If you'd like to keep the stone aesthetic without the cost, stone veneer and manufactured stone are both less expensive than real stone.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

Yes, you can technically use a pressure washer to remove paint from brick, but it comes with a significant risk of damaging the brick surface. A high-power pressure washer can be fast but may leave the brick looking unsightly. The recommended method is to first apply a chemical paint stripper, following the product's instructions, and then use a stiff metal bristle brush or a pressure washer on a low-pressure setting to remove the loosened paint. Due to the risk of damage, it is often best to hire a professional who can use low-stress methods.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.
