"We priced a small chimney repair job among several contractors. Benny's price was fair, he responded quickly, finished the job within a week of giving us an estimate and his job was great. They (His crew is also his wife, Emily) cleaned up afterward and came by the next day to do a follow up wash. We would definitely recommend Masonry Restoration."

"Excellent concrete work, but they left black marks on the concrete next to where they worked and large black tire marks on my driveway. When I made Tony aware of the problem, he told me I could hose the marks off which didn t work. While their workmanship on the concrete work was impeccable, they left me with a problem to try and solve myself with little luck so far!"

"Estimator David Bock was accurate with prediction of duration of work required, came to oversee two workers, who knew their business very well. Showed up on time, cut a paver to finish our patio, cleaned up, and left. Mr. Bock suggested method for completion of some other stone/patio projects for us."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Removing paint from brick can have both aesthetic and practical value. Some people prefer the timeless look of bare brick, making it worthwhile to remove old paint layers. Brick also lasts longer when unpainted, as paint traps moisture, causing the brick to deteriorate more quickly. If your brick walls are already in bad shape, stripping the paint off might do more harm than good.

No, it’s not recommended to attach shutters to brick without drilling. Brick is dense and built to last, so adhesives and shortcut methods don’t usually cut it. Even heavy-duty glue struggles to hold up over time—especially against wind, moisture, and temperature changes. Most no-drill options are made for materials like vinyl or wood, not solid masonry. Skipping the drill might seem easier, but it puts your shutters—and anything below them—at risk. For a secure, lasting install, drilling is the way to go. It takes more effort up front, but the result is safer and more reliable.

The difference between river rock and landscaping rocks is size, smoothness, and use. River rocks are smooth and flat, as if polished by water, and come in diameters between 1 and 8 inches. Landscape rock can vary in size from small pea gravel installations to car-sized boulders. However, landscaping and river rocks are interchangeable in many situations. River rock is best for pathways, walkways, garden bed mulch, water features, and planting accents, while small landscape rocks can serve as a walkway base, gravel playground areas, and filler between pavers.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
