"We wanted to get on board with the current trend in doorbell cameras. Got a quote from ADT Provider, known as Safe Street USA, and felt their offer was more than fair. We have door sensors and motion detectors inside and the doorbell camera mounted outside. Nice to feel “with the times” in home automation and security."

"Last weekend had someone pry our side door open to our exterior garage and the ADT door sensor picked it up immediately. The alarm siren was loud and scared the person off. Someone from the response center called within 30 seconds. We’re fortunate that the security system did what it is supposed to. Feels like we made the right call going with an ADT security system."

"I wasn’t able to be there in person, so I communicated with Guilco via WhatsApp and explained what I needed done. The job involved removing the security bars, patching the bolt holes, and repainting the affected areas. He completed everything in about an hour and sent me photos of the finished work. I’m so happy to have finally found a reliable contractor/handyman I can trust to take care of repairs and maintenance for my home. It gives me real peace of mind knowing I have someone dependable to call when I need help."

"I was originally planning to get a wooden door, but Tony explained how much cheaper and easier it would be just to get a pre-hung metal door. He explained it would never need maintenance (as, of course, wood does), and all I'd ever have to do is just hose it down. None of the other people I interviewed for the job thought to suggest that, and one of them gave me an estimate of $1,500! I am very happy with the door; it's heavy-duty and looks just like wood. Tony, his son, and Cody were extremely, polite, professional, and helpful. They did the work in a timely manner and told me to be sure and call them it there were any problems. I would definitely hire them again."

"The remarkably poor quality of work done by the contractor that the prior owner had hired to do the flip on out house had to be seen to be believed. It all started when we found our hardwood floors water damaged near our french doors after a few days of moderate rain in February. It turned out that the doors had been installed without proper water proof paper, no flashing and that the trim used was indoor rated lumber. We additionally became concerned about out windows when we noticed the molding outside warping away from the wood frame, and cracks appearing in the caulking across the tops on the inside, to the extent that we could see daylight. So much for our nice energy efficient seal, not to mention allowing bugs in. We figured that if the French doors had no flashing, it might be worth checking all the windows for waterproofing. When Felipe and his excellent team started demoing the windows they discovered a multitude of problems - *the contractors had actually used MDF (an indoor decorative wood product) as exterior molding, and in at least one case to support the weight of a window (it was a bathroom window and the MDF INSIDE the wall was soaked like a sponge.) * the windows were just set into the walls without proper sills to support the weight, with a piece of cheap pine (used throughout) tacked in front to make it appear that there was a sill - this is why the caulk was cracking, the whole units were sagging. * NO flashing, so all our windows were leaks waiting to happen. The only silver lining to the drought in CA is that we were able to repair our windows before the winter rains. In the case of the French Doors some odd flashing had been placed so that it acted like a funnel channeling rain water directly inside to the hardwood floor! * They had filled (with caulk) the engineered drain holes that are an important part of the aluminum windows. * In one case, we discovered huge gobs of caulking had been used to disguise 4 inch wide holes above a window, instead of properly filling it with the three layers of stucco needed - again it was a leak waiting to happen. Felipe and his team did a complete retrofit of 10 windows (those that had been put in by the flippers) and the french doors. The matched the stucco to the existing, used high quality cedar lumber, put in the proper flashing and paper, sanded and sealed then painted the new trim, neatened the external appearance of windows with stucco, and recaulked the interiors, over the course of 7 days. They started promptly at 8 each day, and left between 4.30 and 5pm, working efficiently. We did have to add more to the job, since the egregiously bad work was a greater surprise than expected, but luckily Felipe had allowed extra time before his next commitment, just in case of problems. We will be having Felipe back to do some tile work, and any other handyman work that we might need. My husband and I could not be happier with the work. We are so relieved to know that our windows and doors are now properly built. Bring on the El Niño!

"Derek fixed my folding laundry room doors.. I thought that they were literally gone. I was prepared to throw them away and buy new ones. "Nope, I can fix this." Derek said. And he did. They work better now than when I initially bought them. Derek is friendly, smart and very knowledgeable. I could not imagine how he was going to fix my plantation shutters. Once again, he was able to repair them, I have some flooring that I need to replace and I am making a plan with Derek to do that as well. I do not think that there is anything that Derek can not fix. I am so happy that I found Derek. This is my first time using Angie's List. If Derek is the type of professional that is on Angie's List, I will use nothing else. Five Stars to Derek at Local Home Services."

"The service technician, Danny, examined the damage and said all we needed was a new door knob/lock and suggested a dead bolt, too. (Wish I'd had one in place before. If you're reading this and don't have dead bolts on your perimeter doors, ADD THEM NOW). He said the rest could be repaired like new (really?). By the time I returned with the hardware, Danny had the doorway and door repaired and was sanding the affected areas. He primed and painted the repairs in short. It actually looks better than prior to the burglary. Amazing work by a true craftsman. I've had handymen before, but Mr. Handyman's guy was in a league of his own. The price was fair, too. Look no further.

"Marco showed up right when he said he would. I had him do some minor plumbing and work on my kitchen door and fix the latch on my screen door. The work was top notch and done quickly. He was very helpful and polite the whole time he was here."

Security Doors questions, answered by experts

To prevent false alarms, motion detectors need proper placement and settings. Start by installing them away from pets and windows where outside movement could set them off. Adjust the sensitivity settings to reduce the likelihood of it detecting minor motions. Consider using dual-tech sensors, for example passive infrared (PIR) and microwave technology, to improve accuracy and reduce false alarms. And don’t forget regular maintenance—cleaning the sensor and checking for any obstructions can go a long way in making sure your detectors run smoothly.

Strike plates and security plates are the same thing, but there are strike plates that offer more security than others. For the highest security, look for plates made of heavy-duty steel, reinforced strike plates thicker than regular ones, and extended strike plates. It’s much harder to break into a door with these strike plates because they hold up better to force from attempted entry.

One significant drawback of home automation is the increased risk of cybersecurity threats. With more connected devices in our homes, there's a greater chance that hackers might try to exploit vulnerabilities to access personal data or even control your devices. If you don't secure your smart gadgets properly, they can become entry points for cyberattacks, risking your privacy and safety. Moreover, technology isn't perfect. Sometimes, systems can malfunction or experience connectivity issues, disrupting your daily routines. The upfront cost of buying and installing smart devices can also be a hurdle for some people.

The main difference between different security sensor options is the type of motion each detects. A motion detector monitors obvious movements in hallways, entrances, and exits. On the other hand, a presence detector is more sensitive and captures smaller moves. A window sensor typically focuses on the opening and closing of the window, whereas a glass break sensor alarms you when a glass is broken.

Depending on your needs and wants, investing in a security door can be well worth the cost. Now that you know the pros and cons, you can decide if it’s a purchase that makes sense for your family. If you’re ready to have one installed in your home, look into security door installers in your area.
