"Here's my story (bear with me if you want a good roofer): Soon after the heavy rains hit Southern CA this past winter, I realized -- along with thousand of other homeowners -- that I needed a new roof. So I contacted six potential roofers using a variety of sources, including Angie's List. Here's how they went: 1. Left vm; no response. 2. Got a vm that said -- I'm not kidding here -- "We're very busy right now and may not call you back for a while." They never called me back. 3. Contacted company that said someone would come out to look at my house and give me an estimated. When I didn't hear from them, I called and emailed several times, but never got a reply. 4. Got a very low estimate from this person, who never asked me what kind of roofing material I wanted or would tell me how long it would take. Turns out he is not licensed or insured. I passed. 5. This person came out and looked at the house and within days give me an estimate that was so high it would have required me to sell my house just to pay for it. (OK, slight exaggeration -- but not much.) And oh, yes, because they were so busy, they couldn't start my job for months. I passed. 6. Trusting a roofer with an Angie's List Certification AND a Super Service Award, I contacted George Parks Roofing and Painting in Santa Monica, CA, a family-owned business. George came out the next day to look at the house, and within days had sent me a fair and reasonable estimate. When I asked him how long it would be before he could start, he told me his crew could begin the following Monday. Really? Yes, he promised. That following Monday, his crew was there and started replacing my roof. After a few days, when it was obvious his folks were doing a good job, I took George up on his offer to paint my house (which it needed, but I was going to save that for another day) at a discount. That Saturday, the new roof was complete and looked beautiful. Then the painters began. One week later, they, too, where done. And they, too, did a great job -- even adding more layers of paint than originally planned because the first coats didn't quite do the job. At all times, George's crew were polite and responded quickly to any concerns I had -- debris in yard, spots missed with paint, etc. And George was in touch with me on a daily basis, stopping by the house at least once a day to make sure everything was going as planned. Bottom line: The job was done well and on time and at a reasonable price. I told me wife as we were nearing the end that something must be wrong -- a contractor fulfilling every promise he made and leaving my house beautiful. But there was nothing wrong. George Parks did what he said he would do. What a concept! I can't promise you'll have the same experience I did, but I could not be more pleased. Job well done."

"I can't recommend Reign Roofing enough! They completed our steep roof project in just one week, and the quality of work is excellent. After receiving quotes from 10 other roofers, Reign Roofing stood out for its professionalism, reasonable pricing, and transparency. Our insurance (USAA) was difficult, offering only half of the replacement cost, but Reign Roofing worked with them to submit a detailed estimate and get our roof fully covered. We’re grateful for their hard work and help navigating the insurance process. Thank you, Reign Roofing!"

"Recently finished my roof replacement with Clear View. Initially had an old shingle roof with a leak in a corner bedroom. Had a very informative and helpful inspection. The entire process was easy and done in a week and couple days. Would recommend to everyone who needs assistance with anything regarding their roof/home. 10/10"

"Bill came over to my Mom's house and did a complete inspection of the roof. My Mom was concerned that she might need a new roof before the rains come.  Bill was so nice and honest with his discussion with my Mom and me.  He said that she had at least another 10 to 15 years of life left on her roof.  I asked if I could pay him for his time and he said no thanks.
I have so much respect and appreciation for Bill and Jordan roofing, that when either I or my family needs a roof, I will use them !!
And I will recommend them to my friends !!

"I hired Specialist Roofing and Repair to install a new roof. I was a little worried because my roof has a very steep pitch. I could imagine how the guys would work on that roof, but in a few days they had the old roof off and a brand new one installed. I was very impressed with the work that they did. I recommend them to anyone that needs any roof work done. Thanks to all the guys at Specialist Roofing and Repair!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Manufacturers, insurance companies, and municipality regulations are phasing out three-tab shingles. Because of their short lifespan and lack of durability compared to other roofing material types, manufacturers are leaning toward better products, and cities and insurers are starting to require better building materials overall. However, 3-tab shingles are still for sale, and some roofing companies still install them.

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

Gaps between tiles are necessary to help with weatherproofing, allow for thermal expansion, and increase wind resistance. In general, a small gap no larger than 3 millimeters wide will encourage proper drainage and limit cracking. Beyond that, tiles should overlap a minimum of 3 inches, except at the eaves where they should extend to the center of the gutter.

You shouldn’t put a new roof underlayment over an old one for a few reasons. Old felt must be removed in order to assess the condition of your roof decking, such as rotting wood or other structural issues. Also, if your roofer doesn't install a fresh layer of felt as is required by shingle manufacturers, your warranty may be voided. Finally, old underlayment removal is often included in the cost of roof repair or replacement, so there's no real benefit to leaving it on before installing a new layer.

If your roof has storm damage, there will be some telltale signs. These include missing, loose, or damaged shingles. You may notice cracks or dents on the metal parts of your roof, like flashing, gutters, or metal panels. Water leaks are another big indicator. So are visible signs of impact. Rather than climb up on your roof to check, hire a professional to inspect the area  safely.
