A chimney liner isn’t required for an outdoor fireplace; you don’t technically need one if the masonry chimney uses the proper dimensions and is built to code. However, a chimney liner does serve as a protective coating for the flue. Adding a liner could improve performance, safety, and durability. In short, while not necessary, it wouldn’t hurt.

A chimney without a liner is not recommended. Chimney liners protect the surrounding structure from heat, reducing the risk of fire or structural damage. Just as important, liners prevent carbon monoxide and other toxic gases from leaking into your abode by guiding smoke and gases out more effectively. Remember, installing a liner ensures safety and extends the life of your chimney.

There are a handful of things you can look out for that indicate fireplace repair is necessary in your home:

See or smell smoke in your home during use.
You smell gas or unusual odors coming from your fireplace.
The fireplace is visibly damaged or crumbling.
The igniter won’t light.
You notice shaling (pieces of chimney lining) building up in your fireplace.
Any portion of the fireplace is rusted.
You notice efflorescence (white stains) on the brick.
