If your gas fireplace is vented through a chimney, a chimney cap is highly recommended. While not all gas fireplaces require a traditional chimney, for those that use one, a cap provides several key benefits. It prevents rain, debris, and animals from entering the chimney, which can cause blockages or damage. A cap also helps prevent downdrafts that could push harmful gases like carbon monoxide back into your home. When installing a cap, ensure it is appropriate for a gas fireplace and does not restrict proper ventilation.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

Pellet stoves do require electricity to power their automated features, such as the pellet feeder, fans, and digital controls. However, their electricity consumption is relatively low compared to other household appliances. During a power outage, pellet stoves equipped with battery backup systems or manual ignition options can still operate, though fans and automatic feed mechanisms may not function.
