"In July 2024 I hired Insulation Labs to add more insulation to our attic. They showed up on time with a truck full of insulation, and a few hours later they had put all of it inside our attic. They did a good job up there. I am very pleased with how everything turned out. One thing that distinguished Insulation Labs from some other outfits is that they did not try to up-sell us with services we didnâ t need."

"After talking with several attic clean out and insulation, wall insulation companies, I decided to go with Marathon Insulation. Johnathan was very helpful and professional, gave the best choices for my issues, without trying to upsell like some of the others. After getting the attic and walls insulated (with attic clean out) I can already feel the heat stay in the rooms much longer and the walls much less cold to the touch before. I highly recommend Marathon Insulation! They were always on time, delivered as promised, and cleaned up after."

"We had Insulation Nation (Dustin) come to our house to look at our attis insulation; our house was built in the late 70's and I had added more blown-in insulation many years ago. We decided on adding 8" of blown-in insulation to reduce our heating/cooling cost and to reduce the cycling of our HVAC system. They did a wonderful job of sealing any attic leaks, covers for our canned lighting fixtures, built a dam around our whole house fan, added baffles around our soffits, and added the insulation. Nicely done and a professional job. Would recommend using their service."

"After having a new air conditioning system installed, to replace an old inefficient one, we decided to make sure our attic had the correct insulation as well as the appropriate R-value. Since our home was built in the 1950's, the insulation throughout the attic was minimal. We hired Insulation Commandos to survey and provide us with the appropriate solution. The solution involved removal of the old insulation, cleaning the area, and installing the correct insulation based on our homes location. We now believe we can keep our energy costs down and provide less strain on our AC system. Great job team!"

"Overall great experience with my blow-in cellulose insulation project. David was courteous throughout, took time to explain the various insulation products, helped me decide what was best for my objective. "We hired atticare to take out our old insulation and replace it with new. The house was sweltering hot because the old insulation we had was dust. They were professional and helpful. Eric the project manager went above and beyond to ensure that we were happy with the job, sending an electrician to fix the doorbell that got damaged during the job even though I didn’t notice for weeks. The house feels so much cooler after the installation, much better investment than paying $10k to put in ac unit. In addition to the great work and awesome customer service, Eric shared information about how to apply for a $1400 rebate from dwp. We are applying and I doubt we would have found out about the program if it hadn’t been for atticare."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The amount and type of insulation your home needs depends on your location, climate, and the specific installation area (attic, walls, or floors). Your local building code will typically determine the minimum required R-value. For specific recommendations, Energy Star suggests the following R-values: homes in the Southern U.S. should have R30 to R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in floors and walls; homes in moderate climates need R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

Ductwork sweats due to a temperature difference between the air inside the ducts and the surrounding air, similar to how a cold drink develops condensation in the heat. This sweating is a sign that your HVAC system is not operating at peak efficiency. The best way to keep ductwork from sweating is to wrap it in proper insulation, which also improves your system's energy efficiency. Another option is to close off your crawl space and install a dehumidifier to dry the air and lower its dew point.

A-frame houses pose specific challenges that can make heating difficult. Their open concept design with high ceilings can lead to a colder lower floor and a warmer upper floor. A ceiling fan that pushes warm air down or pulls cold air up, depending on the season, can easily counteract temperature issues. Additionally, certain types of heating do better in these homes than others. For example, heated floors tend to be more practical and energy efficient than baseboard heating.

In some areas, insulation companies require a special license, while some states only require them to hold general contractor licenses. Some municipalities may not mandate any license, although you should always ensure a contractor is fully insured. You can use Angi’s license lookup tool to confirm whether or not an insulation contractor you’re considering holds the necessary license for your area. You can also contact the company for information regarding licenses, certifications, and insurance.

Your house may be cold even if the heat is on because of bad insulation, gaps in doors, small holes pulling hot air from the home, or excess humidity. The heater itself might be malfunctioning. For this problem, you’d need to talk to an HVAC pro. If you have a gas heating system (most do) this should be considered an urgent job as natural gas could be leaking in your home.
