"We came home after a week of vacation and found that we had a hot water leak. We contacted Water Fixers and they sent out a plumber to check out the situation. After that we received a quote for the work to be done. We spoke to Lynda the Office Manager a few times and she was very kind and helpful. We also spoke to Victor, the Owner and he was very nice and professional. Victor explained to us what needed to be done to repair our slab leak. Fortunately the leak itself was small and had not done any damage so they did not have to rip up the floor. They did have to cut several holes under sinks, the hot water heater and in the ceiling in our laundry room as they had to put in new water lines and reroute them into our attic and down the walls into both bathrooms and the kitchen. We ended up having two plumbers doing the work and it took 4 days to complete the job. The two plumbers were very nice and worked very hard to get the leak repaired and made sure to verify that the repair was done correctly and that there were no leaks when they were done. The final bill was a bit more than the quote, but we believe that the charges were fair and we are satisfied with the work that they did. Water Fixers also took care of the leak detection themselves, which was really convenient so we did not have to have two different companies involved. We highly recommend Water Fixers for any plumbing job small or large."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.

Most experts agree there’s not much difference health-wise between hard water versus soft water. That said, hard water is more likely to cause skin dryness and issues that go along with it, like an itchy or flaky scalp. Hard water can also decrease the life span of your household appliances and make it more difficult for soap to do its job.

You can use a commercial water repellent treatment for glass on your shower doors to prevent water spots. Take care to only apply the product to glass. Letting air circulate also helps prevent water spots, as water is less likely to remain on the glass for a long time with good air circulation. Run your vent fan, open a window, and leave the shower door open for about half an hour after using the shower.
