"We had our water heater replaced by The Water Heater Company and the service was excellent from start to finish. The technician, Mike P., was professional, on time, and extremely knowledgeable. He explained everything clearly, completed the installation efficiently, and made sure the area was clean before leaving. My new water heater is working great. We really appreciate the quality of work and the attention to detail. We highly recommend The Water Heater Company especially if you want a smooth, stress-free water heater replacement done right the first time."

"The Water Heater Wizard has been amazing. Hes done a bunch of things for me not just the water heater. Because of him I have a fully built out bathroom. 10/10 I recommend him to people every chance I get. The photo of the new bathroom is the update after the main drain had so much corrosion that it it flooded the house. These are pictures of how it used to look and the issues that where resolved."

"This was our first experience using Wighton’s and it won’t be the last. Aaron was very professional and very nice to work with. Our air conditioner stopped working and he was able to fix it and did some maintenance work on the unit also. He also pointed out that we needed to replace the air filter which services our hvac system, which we were grateful that he did because we had never had it changed out with a new one and it was long overdue. We signed up for their maintenance program so that our ac/heating will be inspected and maintained on a regular basis. We are very happy with his work and highly recommend Wighton’s!"

"The owner was pleasant and came on thanksgiving week-end but charged $129 to solely inspect the furnace. His estimate for repairs was way higher than another company that we went with and fixed the problem."

"Jose of Smart Choice Plumbing did an excellent job of installing a new water heater. He is professional, knowledgeable, honest and conscientious about his work. He did a thorough job, and cleaned the work area when he was done. He also charges a fair price for his work. I would highly recommend him for any plumbing job."

"Gilbert was easy to deal with, drove some distance to help me THE SAME AFTERNOON, replacied a messy 20 year old water heater and greatly upgraded my hot water system. He did everything to make it codeworthy, came in to deal with the vent in my attic. All this at a lower price than a number of other bids."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

The average cost to replace a water heater is around $1,325, with a typical range of $900 to $1,800 for a standard replacement. The final price depends on the type of heater (tank vs. tankless), its size, fuel source (gas or electric), and the complexity of the installation. A simple one-to-one replacement will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. However, if you are switching from one type of heater or energy source to another, you can expect labor costs to be significantly higher due to the extra work involved. It's also worth considering that while gas and electric heaters may have similar upfront costs, their long-term operating costs can differ based on local utility prices.

Storage, tankless, heat pumps, and solar water heaters each suit specific space constraints, usage needs, and efficiency preferences.

If you want instant hot water and to reduce water waste while improving convenience, a hot water recirculating system is worth it, especially if you find your hot water heater is not hot enough. These systems can save thousands of gallons of water each year so you don't have to wait for hot water at faucets and showers. The upfront investment can be high, especially for systems requiring additional plumbing, but the long-term savings on water bills and added comfort make them a worthwhile upgrade.

The lifespan of a water heater depends on its type, usage, and maintenance schedule. Traditional tank-style water heaters typically last between 8 and 12 years, though the range can be as wide as 6 to 15 years. Within this category, gas models often last 8-12 years, while electric models may last 10-15 years. In contrast, tankless water heaters have a significantly longer lifespan, often lasting up to 20 years or more. Factors like heavy usage, hard water, and sediment buildup can shorten a unit's life. To extend its lifespan, it is crucial to perform regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank annually and scheduling professional inspections. If your unit is over a decade old and shows signs of rust, leaks, strange noises, or inconsistent heating, it is likely time for a replacement.

Depending on the brand of water heater, you may need to install an expansion tank in order to meet the conditions for warranty coverage. It’s important for consumers to read the fine print of the warranty to see if an expansion tank is necessary. Even if an expansion tank isn’t required for the warranty, it’s usually mandated by building codes—although not for tankless water heaters.
