"Home Care and Repair’s Jose Pajares did an excellent job in completing the design from a sketch and building my Custom Intertainment Cabinet. The Cabinet was exactly what I wanted and fit perfectly. His crew installed and stained the unit without any problems. I’m very happy with the completed job. I recommend using Home Care and Repair for any Cabinet projects."

"First off, I was very proud to support an army veteran in choosing Felipe out of 3 bids to do a somewhat complex remodel of my master bathroom. He shows up when he says he will show up, and if he is late, he lets you know (rare in this business!). He only commits to one large project at a time, and what this means is that he would show up at 8am each day, and work through the whole day, I never felt we had a wasted day in this project. He was also extremely respectful of our home and schedule. He insisted his guys lay drop clothes throughout the house to avoid getting dirt and dust everywhere, and he even rolled up the cloths at the end of each day. If a day ran late, he was only to happy to stay late and finish the work, but only after asking us permission - he was very concerned to disrupt our evening family time. This level of respect for his customer is something that he insists on with his crew, and we found every one of them to be polite, hardworking, reliable and respectful. Felipe is also very focused on making sure we were happy, and I wasn't an easy customer for this. If I noticed I didn't like the way something was done, he would explain his reasoning, but if that wasn't good enough for what I needed, he always obliged to make the change so I would be happy. The project involved a full demo of a master bathroom, and also removing a wall to extend the bathroom into a patio space, to create a 100 sq. foot bathroom. This required lots of concrete demo, re-leveling the patio floor, building a new tub frame, installing a large tub, building a shower pan, plumbing and drain rerouting, new flooring, installing shiplap on several walls, electrical, installing large windows and a skylight, converting to a 2-sink vanity, shower glass enclosure and lots of marble tiling work. In this much complexity, we did have lots of bumps along the way, but with his good heart, we got through them, and at the end, we are super happy with our new bathroom. Felipe has skills in framing, tile work, plumbing, carpentry and drywall. Unique in his drywall approach, he creates very little dust by getting to an almost smooth finish that requires less sanding work. In plumbing he wasn't always familiar with the newer plumbing fittings that we got, but unlike others he would say "let's look at the instructions". His tiling work was good, and he worked with marble, porcelain and ceramic on this project - I will say this was the most tedious part of the project to get right! He worked very hard, and I would say an extra 5 days than planned to accommodate our needs, and never charged us extra. For all the extra work he did when issues came up such as floor leveling, plumbing runs, he never complained, and honored the original contract we signed. Overall I recommend Felipe as an amazing guy to hire to do any kind of home repair. With Felipe, you could just trust him and leave him to do your full project without worry. If you have exacting requirements (as I did), then my advice is to clearly write out what you need, so things don't get forgotten or confused along the way, and Felipe is only too happy to have you check his work and adjust/accommodate as you go along."

"I hired Kyle for a $14,000 home remodeling project based on reviews from Angie's List and Yelp, and overall, I am satisfied with the work Kyle and his team performed and I feel like I got my money's worth. Below are my thoughts: 1. Timeliness: Kyle's crew showed up on time every day and stuck to the schedule. The entire project stayed mostly on track. Things were slightly delayed due to city inspection, but that was a factor beyond Kyle's control. So definitely an A there. 2. Quality of work - I had three major projects in this remodeling, and below are my thoughts on them: a. Conversion of a bedroom into a mudroom/entry room to garage: For some reason this new house I bought did not have an access door from garage directly into the house, so I hired Kyle to remedy this by turning a bedroom that shares a common wall with the garage into a mud room with an access door. Job involved cutting the wall open and installing a fire rated entry door, as well as removing old wall paper and repainting the room. This job was done very well and definitely an A there. b. Bathroom remodeling: I also had Kyle remove an old bathtub & tile surround and replace it with a new jacuzzi tub, new tiles and an updated tub door. We also had the toilet repositioned as well. Final quality of work was very nicely done and we were very pleased with how the new tiles turned out. Regrettably, the new bath tub got a small 1" size scratch on one of the rim and I had to touch up paint it afterwards. So A-/B+ there due to my new tub getting scratched up during tile installation. c. House electrical upgrade: I had Kyle and his crew installing an 100 amp subpanel with 2x 50 amp outlets in the garage for EV charging. I also had multiple new outlets installed throughout the house. All the newly installed outlets worked very well and I am pleased with the results. However, after all the electrical work were done, three of my outlets in the house lost power due to a "open neutral". To make a long story short, Kyle's crew tried to trouble shoot it for the better part of a day but couldn't figure out what caused it. All the worker could say is that he doesn't think it was caused by their work. As this happened at the very end of the entire remodeling project and I was uncertain whose fault it was, I ended up just letting it go. Subsequently I did more troubleshooting on my own and after several hours of trial-and-error testing using a multimeter, I found a loose neutral wire in a bathroom switch box Kyle's crew worked on. The loose neutral wire was covered up by a bunch of other wire and wire nuts in the switch box. Once that wire was reconnected, the three dead outlets became functional again. My guess is that the wire got shaken loose when Kyle's crew swap out the switches in that box with new light and fan switches, and no one realized it because that wire was buried behind other wires. I can understand how Kyle's worker missed it while trying to trouble shoot this issue. However, I'm still a bit miffed that I end up having to fix this problem myself. Thus, while the newly installed outlets are great, I am not too thrilled with the fact that his worker knocked a wire loose while changing out bathroom switches and couldn't fix the problem. So on this part of the project, I would give Kyle's team an A on the new outlets and C for causing collateral damage on my other outlets that I had to fix myself. 3. Conclusion - other than the problems with the loose neutral wire and the scratch to the new tub noted above, everything else went smoothly. Thus, in light of the scope of this remodeling project, I decided that these two issues are minor and don't detract too much from the overall success. Thus, I ended up giving Kyle and his crew an A- overall."

"HIC builders is a family owned company, and they did a terrific job at my house. We added an ADU above the garage, remodeled two bathrooms, and did other extensive work on the house. Abraham, the field manager, was responsive and available, flexible when plans needed to change to accommodate structural issues that we discover as the project progressed, and answered my endless questions. The workmen were always on time, courteous, and cleaned up the site every day before they left. Probably the easiest way to find out if HIC can provide what you want is to call Abraham Moryossef directly (818 850 5062) and chat. I know it will be a good investment of your time. They are terrific!"

"The experience with D2A Construction was amazing. It is the first time we actually enjoy the process of remodeling; aside from the normal disruption of not having a kitchen, Dani made the process as stress-free as possible. You can tell that their goal is to build a long-lasting relationship with their clients. They not only delivered on time and within budget, but they were responsive and very meticulous about the quality of their work. They also were super helpful when it came to picking materials and finishes- they advice on color trends and suggested design elements that we have not considered. I would highly recommend D2A and look forward to partner with them in the future."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
