"Gilbert helped fix a front door that wouldn’t close. He helped my mother and I after 6pm when we were not able to find anyone else. He did a great job getting the door to fully close. Very respectful and kind. He showed up when he said he would and cleaned after himself. We will definitely work with him again."

"Nathan showed up on time on the same Saturday that I called, for rekeying the security door bolt lock, since we had lost one set of keys. He advised me to rekey the deadbolt on the inner, stouter door, and charged only slightly more. Excellent service!"

"Batyr is more than a locksmith; he is a miracle worker. We have a very old, custom made front door with a doorknob that would not stay on. Several other locksmiths have attempted to fix it with no success. One locksmith in the past told us that the entire door would need to be replaced. Another said it was impossible to fix and refused to look at it. Batyr patiently took the doorknob assembly apart and crafted a solution. He spent two and a half hours doing this and charged only his standard rate. His rate was very reasonable, the doorknob is working again, and the old, custom made doors are once again as functional as they are beautiful."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

Changing door locks is a task that most homeowners can accomplish on their own. Standard door knobs are quite straightforward, and even more advanced locks, like electronic or smart locks, generally come with instructions. That said, the process can be time-consuming, especially if you plan to replace multiple locks around the house. It’s also a task that you want to complete correctly, considering that it affects the security of your house. That’s why hiring a pro is often best when changing your door locks.

Yes, you should always change your locks after buying a house. Do so as soon as possible after you move in. Otherwise, you won’t know who has working keys to the property, whether they’re spare keys or otherwise. If an intruder gains access to your house with a key, it may not be covered under your homeowners insurance.

The cost to hire a locksmith varies depending on the service you need. Consult your locksmith about the price of your requested services before hiring for your repair or installation. Some of the most common types of locksmith services include:

  • Installing deadbolts: $40–$75

  • Rekeying: $80–$160

  • Unlocking your house: $65–$180

  • Changing locks: $50–$200

  • Installing electronic locks: $50–$500

  • Installing smart locks: $200–$800

  • Keyless locks: $50–$300
