Doug was super --  thoughtful about how to make the work look and function as well as possible.  He let me know in advance what questions he had, how he was going to keep our house as clean as possible, and what his recommendations were.  We've worked with Doug twice and have found the quality and experience to be great both times.  I also appreciated that Doug put equal care and thought into both of our projects, even though one project was relatively small.

When we bid the project he provided the most detailed bid and his cost was competitive.  This gave us a level of comfort that the add-ons that are always required when you open up 80 year old walls would be kept to a minimum.   Doug drew plans (not included in bid) and did not charge us for them when the city required them for the permits.
The quality of the work was excellent, both inside and out.  On the exterior chimney demolition a scaffolding was built and enclosed with mesh to keep the debris contained and prevent damage.   On the interior Doug was always prepared with construction paper and tape, and moving blankets to reduce the mess and protect the floor, furniture, and woodwork from any damage.
The Koefoed crew were solid and inspired confidence.  Doug's communication was excellent.  He explained what was going on, and what are alternatives where, and he kept the project moving through permit and rain delays.

Koefoed Construction was great.  They came right in on budget and finished exactly when they said they would be finished.  The same guys showed up everyday on time and there were no hidden costs or surprises.  Doug and his team were really professional and easy to work with.

The previous owner suggested we'd need to completely replace the roof under the deck.   We got bids to do that in the $4000+ range, but others, including Doug, recommended trying to track the source of the leak before committing to re-roof.   We discovered that the leak came from an area above the roof - a roof replacement would not necessarily have fixed the problem.  Another contractor recommended spending about $3500 to reflash the entire suspect area the roof was attached to the house, taking out a large sliding door to the deck because door thresholds are often leak sources when above lower rooms.   Doug very smartly and patiently discussed options with me and worked with me to try to isolate the leak and see if a patch would work.   He was clear that patch solutions typically are difficult to complete, and may not last, but was happy to work on it.  He spent an hour caulking a suspect area that turned out to not be the problem.  When I later water tested, though, having that throughly caulked eliminated it as a possibility and helped isolate the small remaining area where the leak turned out to be.   He came back after I did the water testing and patched the areas I'd identified as the probable entry points.   It turned out they apparently were the entry points, so when he patched them, we'd stopped the leak for much less than we'd originally thought.  How great to not have a bucket in the middle of our bedroom any more!  As Doug pointed out, the leak was caused by poor original construction and attachment of the deck and roof that we'll probably need to address in a year or five when the patches start to fail.  In the meantime, we're happy to be able to save our money for the many other fix-up projects we still have left in our new house.

Doug is quite a friendly guy, very oriented to be helpful as his first order of business.   I've worked with many contractors, and based on my limited experience with him on this small project, I'd say he's a great find - smart, knowledgeable, helpful, reasonably priced - a good combination of characteristics.

Doug was very professional from our first contact onward, helping us to find an architect and to navigate the permitting process in the City of Tiburon. The quality of his work was outstanding, as was the work of his sub-contractors. He made many helpful suggestions regarding design, materials, and how to do things for the lowest possible cost. He communicated with us on a regular basis regarding the progress of the work and the reason for any changes, delays or increase in cost. The project was more expensive than anticipated, because (1) we had to hire an architect to draw plans to submit to the City of Tiburon for approval, (2) due to the age of the house we ran in to problems concerning drainage and plumbing that had to be corrected before the project could pass inspection, and (3) we sometimes decided against the cheapest option for aesthetic reasons. Doug and his crew were extremely reliable and trustworthy; my in-laws found them to be a pleasure to have on their property.

Doug finished the earthquake retrofit at our home, and we're very happy with the results. Doug worked with us to make sure the work would fit in our budget, and he also communicated with the engineer to clarify various sticking points. Doug is very knowledgeable about retrofit matters, and suggested a number of cost-saving ideas that even the engineer hadn't considered. The final result is not only strong, but also looks good. Fantastic work!

Doug has been a pleasure to work with, and he has done exceptional work for us, on time, and on budget. We couldn't be happier with the final product, as well as with how the overall project went. Doug provided us with detailed quotes from the beginning, and worked with us to tweak various aspects to make sure that we could fit everything in our budget. He was always responsive to our questions, and helped us with design as well as structural decisions. The work itself was top-notch, just like the previous times we've worked with him. All the other sub-contractors that Doug recommended have also been excellent throughout, on time and on budget. No detail was too small or insignificant for Doug, and his first priority was to make sure that we're happy with the work. The project took a little over two months, which is a long time to have someone doing work at the house, but to Doug's credit, we never felt like the work being done was intrusive or otherwise problematic. We'll recommend Doug to anyone else doing remodeling work, and will work with him again in the future.

I am extremely happy with our Eichler master bathroom remodel that was done by Koefoed Construction. Not only was Doug prompt, courteous and very professional, he understood the space constraints of an Eichler bathroom. He assisted me in making innovative designs and decisions on maximizing what is a very tight space. We also found Doug to have a delightful personality. When someone is in your home for several weeks, you want that person to be someone you feel comfortable having in your home. We were very comfortable with Doug. Not only are his services reasonably priced, his work is top notch. Everyone who has seen our new bathroom has raved about it. I would highly recommend Koefoed construction to anyone remodeling their home.

Doug did an excellent overall job installing these windows. He patiently answered our questions and gave us helpful suggestions in terms of where to look to evaluate the various windows styles, as well as their pros and cons. He was very careful to measure the existing space in order to make sure the windows would be a tight fit, he helped us select the appropriate stain for the windows to match the existing trim and the final stain color is an almost perfect match. The work itself went smoothly and without any surprises, it took exactly as long as he said it would take, he took care of disposing of the old windows and left the place cleaner than before. We are very happy with the new windows. Doug not only does excellent work, but he is also very patient and considerate in terms of discussing all project details. We will definitely call Doug again in the future for other projects.

see above. Overall it was a totally positive experience. Doug was fair in his estimate of cost and time and he delivered beautifully. His attention to detail and problem solving skills are very difficult ti find. Doug is not a carpenter, he's a craftsman. It's worth paying more for a top quality job.

We wanted a new door and a new dryer vent. Doug helped us every step of the way, from choosing the door and hardware, to choosing the right color, and the installation was perfect. He even repaired a crack on the wall (unrelated to door) just to be nice. The finished project is brilliant and best of all, he beat the vendor's offer by several hundred dollars. He also installed, the same day, a new dryer vent. We have a weird set up in our garage, and I was not sure we could even have a dryer vent. Doug came up with a solution that is safe and aesthetically pleasing. What was really cool about Doug is that he seems to love building things and it was fun to talk to him about other ideas and projects we had in mind. He has great ideas, and his workmanship is excellent. We will definately be using Doug again.

Overall, let me say that Doug Koefoed of Koefoed construction is the best I've ever dealt with. I've done a major remodel on my house in San Rafael, and another remodel on a house in Los Angeles, so I've dealt with many contractors before to base my praise. I haven't found anyone as good before. Doug and his assistant Adam performed all the dry rot and termite damage right on schedule, then quickly took on the many different tasks I had lined up for them, working exceptionally efficiently; even though the work was scattered throughout the house and grounds, and covered many different types of tasks. Whether they were working on the roof, floor tiles, bathroom, ceiling, or outside; they handled the jobs well, gave me fabulous advice and tips as they worked, and got it done in record time and with top quality. I was really impressed because they got a lot of work done that might have otherwise involved calls to half a dozen other specialists, and Doug's rates are reasonable and worth every penny. Plus, Doug and Adam worked hard all day, switching easily and without a complaint from one task to another. They did not make any mistakes, and in many cases fixed or improved things beyond my expectations; again all very pleasantly accomplished and expertly done. I give Doug Koefoed and company my highest recommendation, and would definitely hire him again! In fact, I've already got him scheduled to come over again in a few days. I wish every worker was like Koefoed Construction.

Doug did an excellent job with the (partial) earthquake retrofit at my home. He was very patient and helpful in suggesting ways to change the engineer's design in order to save money, he came to the house multiple times and gave me multiple different bids, all on his own time and dime before I actually selected him to the contractor for this project. Doug was extremely thorough in his estimates and his work. He is very practical, he suggested earthquake retrofit elements that made sense and that the engineer had not originally considered. The final product looks great and is very solid. Doug and his crew did great work, they always showed up on time, he was great about calling or e-mail whenever necessary, they finished the work when they said they did, did it all at the cost we originally agreed upon, and cleaned up nicely before they left.

I moved into a house with two bathrooms that hadn't been updated in 30+ years. (One of the bathrooms was completely unusable.) I selected Koefoed Construction based on their work of several projects for neighbors on both sides of me. They spoke highly of Mr. Koefoed's attention to detail, the quality of work and his ability to suggest alternative plans if the original concept wasn't feasible. I explained what I wanted done and Mr. Koefoed provided me with a plan, budget and time line. He also provided a couple of suggestions that reduced the costs slightly. The work for both bathrooms consisted of taking the rooms down to the studs, replacing rotted wood, old plumbing, outdated electrical systems, resizing and installing new windows, removing walls and changing the layout to maximize and utilize the space. If there were "surprises" (e.g., rotted wood; not enough support), Mr. Koefoed let me know immediately, and provided solutions on next steps so contain the budget as much as possible. He was professional, showed up on time everyday and built two beautifully designed bathrooms on time and on budget. His work was so good that I've used him for every other project on my home and have recommended him to more than a dozen friends who have also employed his services. I am thrilled with the results and strongly recommend his work.
