Customers say: True professional

"Our landscaping in Menlo Park needed a complete refresh. The team replaced thirsty plants with drought-tolerant options that still provide plenty of color and curb appeal. We're using much less water without sacrificing appearance."

"Frustrating. I called for the toilet tuneup at the end of September. Did not show up because of truck accident. The plumber did show up for his appointment and did a good job on my toilet. I decided to get a quotation on my shower leak in rear house. The plumber quoted $180.00. I needed to pay extra money for a shower valve. At the side of the house, there was a water leak in which he stopped. The plumber got sick and I had to deal with a subsitute plumber. He finally finished the job 10/26/17. Gave me a deduction for my frustration."

"I called and setup an appointment for the afternoon.  The dispatcher called back in an hour saying the plumber was free earlier and came immediately.  He was there within an hour and gave me an estimate for the replacement and upgrade that I wanted.  I agreed to the price and within 3 hours I had a new water heater.  I can?t imagine where they could have done any better.

"I needed my drain line cleared. Everything was backed up in my house. I called IE Hydro Jet and they came out right away . They cleaned my line with a water machine and a camera line. He said there are roots in my sewer line, and showed me. Great customer service, answered all my questions. I will definitely use them for all my plumbing needs. I definitely recommend them."

"Hercules was able to come fast for my water heater when it started flooding my house. After Sal finished, I asked him to give me a price to change out my kitchen sink. The price was fair, and he did it a couple days later. They did a great job on everything."

"Thor Backhoe Service went above and beyond to take care of my septic system needs. I was a bit nervous about the whole process because I needed a full septic system replacement, but Phil, the business owner, made me feel really comfortable along every part of the process. I would recommend Thor Backhoe Service to anyone because of their outstanding job performance as well as their great customer service."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Septic tanks and cesspits are both types of sewage and wastewater systems, but they differ in key ways. The main difference between the two systems is that septic tanks separate sewage from wastewater and allow the latter to flow into a drainage field to filter and disperse into the soil. Cesspits don’t have outlets and instead, store sewage until it needs to be pumped by a professional.

Most shallow residential wells are somewhere between 25 and 50 feet deep. They are among the simplest well systems. Deeper wells usually involve drilling to a much greater depth. Water wells for household use are typically 100 to 500 feet deep, depending on local groundwater conditions. Some may be up to 1,000 feet deep or more.

If you’re going away on vacation or leaving your home for a long time, it’s a good idea to switch off your well pump and pressure tank before you go. This way you can prevent any damage from unexpected leaks that may occur or unforeseen electrical issues while you’re away.

A gurgling toilet usually doesn’t mean that your septic tank is full. If waste can’t drain into a full septic tank, you’ll see water and sewage backing up into your fixtures, but the air that causes gurgling is a result of poor venting. You are more likely to have a clog in your vent stack or a damaged air admittance valve.

The average cost to replace a septic tank or install a new system is typically around $7,350, with a broader average range of $5,000 to $12,000. However, total project costs can vary widely, from $5,000 to as much as $22,500. Key factors influencing the price include the size and type of the septic system, the tank material, and the size of your house.

It's important to distinguish between the cost of the tank itself and the cost of the entire system installation, which is significantly more. For the tank alone, costs vary by size:

  • A tank for a one-bedroom house typically costs $500 to $900.

  • A 1,000-gallon tank, suitable for most one- to three-bedroom homes, costs between $900 and $1,500.

  • A tank for a five- or six-bedroom home generally costs $1,200 to $1,600.
