"Sixto’s crew showed up on time and got right to work taking down my 30 yr old jacaranda tree. They did a superb job being careful not to damage surrounding plants, grass or sprinklers. They cleaned up so well that you’d never know a tree was there! Great job!"

Small jobs welcome

"My yard was overgrown. Simon and his team came in and did a great job of cleaning it up. He came out with his assistant and gave me a quote. Not the cheapest, but also nowhere near the most expensive either. The job included removal of overgrown grass and weeds, trimming of bushes and light tree trimming and removal of some small trees. We came to an agreement and his crew arrived on time on the day of the work. We did another walk around the yard before they started just to make sure everyone knew what was expected. I also marked some trees and bushes with tape so that these would be left alone or just trimmed. His crew was very efficient and got the job done in about 7 hours, including their lunch break. Other gardeners had told me it would take at least two days and hauling the debris off was extra. Simon's price included disposal. Excellent job all around! Highly recommended!"

"Robert Duran and his crew from 3-D Tree Services, Inc. were top notch today from the quote/survey to completion! I am amazed how quick, efficient, professional and kind this entire team is to work with! This was a tough job (Old/Invasive Pepper Tree). The crew was in sync with each other, allowing the process to be quick and safe. I’m so happy I found them through Home Advisor and the response to my inquiry was quick. Thank you everyone! "Having owned two homes in Los Angeles for over 20 years, I have hired five different tree service companies (all licensed, insured, and highly rated). None of these comes close to the outstanding work, value, and professionalism of Rancho Tree Care. For this current job (removal of a giant Aleppo pine and heavy cutting back of six other large trees), I got three estimates from three of the most highly rated companies listed on HomeAdvisor. I was most impressed with the knowledge, candor, and courtesy of the Racho representative, Felix. The company is family owned and operated, and I felt a genuine personal commitment from Felix for my project and my satisfaction. As a licensed arborist, Felix showed expert insight on the trees and the proposed projects; furthermore, he spoke candidly about pricing options. He never pushed but demonstrated concern and integrity throughout our conversation. In preparation for the job, there were some logistical challenges with the DWP as they needed to drop electrical wires for the tree removal. During this back-and-forth scheduling hassle, Felix responded promptly to all my emails and was flexible about rescheduling. On the day of the work, Felix’s crew arrived promptly at 7:30 AM; they were a well-coordinated, well-honed, and efficient JUGGERNAUT. I have never seen a more determined, focused, and indefatigable tree crew in my life. Felix supervised throughout the day and exceeded my expectations by a big margin. For the reasonable price he was charging, his thoroughness in cutting back those huge trees was totally unexpected. He was 100% true to his word about what he intended to accomplish—and then some. He threw in some extra detail work on a few trees that were not part of our deal; I believe he did this because he is a true arborist and wants all trees to be in optimal condition. Also, he is a generous person and a perfectionist (I believe), honors his family’s business reputation, and has a stellar work ethic. At the end of a very long, arduous day of work, the crew went over the yard with great care to ensure that all debris was removed--very impressive again. After working with five tree companies in 20 years, I will hire only Rancho as long as I have trees to trim. Very rare these days that a company can earn such unequivocal and well-deserved praise. Thank you very much Felix and crew!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

A few signs a tree may be dead is if the leaves are dead and there are no signs of new blooms. You can also perform a scratch test on some of the branches to check the condition of the cambium layer beneath the bark.

If it is green, it is still alive, but if several are dry, brittle, and brown, the tree may be dying or dead. Always consult an arborist before assuming your tree is dead because you may be able to save it.

Yes, it’s possible to overwater a newly-planted tree. Daily watering is great for the first few weeks, but it’s important not to go overboard. Excessive watering can lead to various problems, including root rot, fungal diseases, and a lack of root development.

Yes, cutting a tree's roots can cause it to fall, particularly if major support roots are severed. In extreme cases, trimming roots can affect the tree's structure and stability. Many crucial roots are located just below the soil's surface. If you make severe cuts to roots more than 2 inches in diameter, you risk impacting the tree's water flow and its ability to withstand severe winds or storms. Even cutting roots less than half an inch in diameter under or outside the tree's canopy can cut off its water supply, causing it to decline, die, and eventually topple.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth.

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

The felling notch you make before you make the final cut will determine which way the tree will fall. The cut will be in a wedge or triangle, and the tree will fall from the highest point of the triangle. You can use this, as well as the process described above, to estimate where a tree will fall.
