Phil & Sons Tree Service

Phil has taken care of my trees for several years. On Saturday evening March 18th I noticed that the wooden trellis, that is about 35 years old and supports a Bougainvillea was collapsing because the wood was rotten. The trellis is about 7' high and 10' wide. I called Phil, he came over Sunday morning and put up caution tape. On Monday his crew spent the whole day cutting back and cleaning up the Bougainvillea, putting a new beam in, and securing the bolts on the other beams. They did a beautiful job in shaping the Bougainvillea. The total cost was only $400.00. I can highly recommend Phil and am so happy with the way my trees look.

Phil and his crew were prompt and were careful with our property. Phil was easy with communication and understood what we needed and had thoughtful advice.  His crew even cleared an area that I had not noticed for hillside safety!  The crew were thoughtful, respectful and answered my questions.

I am definitely using Phi & Sons for trimming our oaks and pines.  Phil is knowledgeable in all aspects of tree care and technologies.  He doesn't promise what he can't deliver and has guided us to other experts who handle specialized fields. Also, his knowledge of California Native Plants is second to none and very useful since we're going in that direction!

I used his company because I wanted an arborist.  I would have given him a "A" except for one thing. It is true that on the phone  he said the word consultation and I said ok, thinking like nearly all business that if you hire them they put it towards the bill. This turned out not to be the case. He said he could do it the next day and I was in a hurry because of other yard word that had to be done. When he wrote out the invoice he put down the $75 consultation fee. While he was looking at the roots I went out and looked at his truck and there in big letters is says "free estimates". When I asked him about this, he said that I had agreed to a consultation and he would not remove the fee. Also, I did not realize until later that he gives a 5% senior fee and I clearly look like a senior and he never mentioned it.  An estimate would have provided the same results. So beware with this company and choose your words carefully.

I asked Mr. Flores for estimate because he is a certified arborist (I looked him up online.)  He and his crew came very early in the morning as he had said he would.  He gave explicit instructions to his lead man (job supervisor came later) regarding exactly how he wanted the front jacaranda was to be pruned. I watched them talk and I was pleased to note that that Mr. Flores and the crew member clearly understood each other.   That tree came out very nice.  They went from the front yard to the back and covered each part of the job.
When the job was done, the men did a great job of cleaning up and then waited for Mr. Flores to come and check out the job.
I hate to hire help, but this was a very pleasant and easy experience.
P.S.  I just realized the crew is still waiting. They don't leave until he approves the job!

The company did excellent work and left the area spotless. Our garden looks great and I would definitely use them again.

They were phenomenal. I'm using them again for another project.

They had the most reasonable estimate among the companies I contacted. They did the work the next day and cleaned up after themselves. They gave suggestions on what needed to be done and they did a good job. They were professional and came at the schedule they promised. When my trees grow higher, I'm definitely going to call them again.

Felipe was prompt in giving me an estimate. They had a cancellation so they came a few days earlier than scheduled. They were running behind on a job and called the morning of the appointment to change for the afternoon. I appreciated that he called right away to let me know.
Workers were clean and polite and answered all of my questions. Felipe was there at the beginning of the job to give them instructions and also gave me tips on other tree issues on my property. He also included some minor pruning on a pepper tree. He is a licensed arborist.
High recommended.

They were fabulous. The yard was cleaned so that it never looked like they had been here. The mulch I wanted from one of the trees was not going to be and quot;goodand quot; mulch so Felipe provided other equivalent mulch for me. I hadn't asked for the and quot;seniorand quot; discount so I put a sticky note on the check. Felipe arrived with the 10% cash from the job and I asked that he distribute it amongst his workers. They were a great crew.

The crew removed a set of more than 20 large Oleanders and cleaned up the sidewalk in one day and they also cleaned up after themsleves. They crew were professional and polite and they had all the professional equipment required to do the job efficiently. Phil was on the job monitoring the progress 90% of the time. In additon, Phil had the necessary insurance and license the city required for this job.
I also got 4 other quotes from smaller companies and Phil's quote was among the lowest ones. But most importantly, on the hindsight, this job would have taken the other (smaller) companies (I received quotes from) a few days to finish and I might have ran into various problems with the company (possibly asking for more money), the city, and/or the neighbors.

I met Phil as he canvassed the neighborhoor promoting the services of Phil and Sons, Inc. He was very personable and knowledgeable. His documentation as a certified Arborist and Certified Tree Worker (insured and bonded) were very professional and put me at ease. Though we were not immediately planning to have our trees done (though it was needed), we had him review the property. He gave us what we came to find out was a very reasonable estimate to trim, prune, reshape almost 20 trees of various shapes and sizes (removing two stumps) and went his way. $900 to do all that. A price not likely found elsewhere.
A few weeks later we were planning a complete re-do of our property's landscaping and realized we needed to do a complete tree-trim and MASSIVE cleanup of weeds, brush and general overgrowth on the property beforehand - and called him back. He returned to further estimate the cleanup and adjusted the estimate accordingly. After a few polite, no-pressure follow ups, we were good to go.
They came to work on time and his efficient crew of 5 did a massive job in one and half days. STELLAR all the way around. The trees were beautifully sculpted with open canopies within. We could NOT have been happier and he and his crew were a joy to deal with. He'll be our go-to tree company for the future. We threw in an extra hundred dollars just because...and our next door neighbors have just signed on with him too.

I called them because they are certified arborists, not just some guys with ladders and chainsaws.
They used a cherry picker to hover over the tree and cut from optimal, safe angles.
I had heard from a landscape designer to be wary of tree service providers who overly rely on ladders and chainsaws, and these guys did niether; they were able to use a hand lopper for most cuts, and they adhered to the rule of opening up the tree inside, and not scalping it on top. Their sense of aesthetics spot on; the tree looks beautiful, still green, and very nicely shaped.
They protected ground foliage from falling branches, and cleaned my rain gutters also.
They even put down drip cloths to protect my driveway from oil drips on their truck.
The owner came by at the beginning and end of the job, and his workers were very chatty and helpful, and full of information you'd expect from certified arborists.
I've seen estimates from non-certified tree trimmers who wanted more money for the same work.

Phil arrived as scheduled to inspect the property and provide a price quote. His crew started a couple of days later, again arriving right as scheduled. The job took 3 days. I'm completely satisfied with the work that was done. The crew did a great job of cleaning up, removing all of the wood and scraps except for a few pieces I wanted to keep, which they placed in my garage. I will be continuing to use Phil and Sons for future tree maintenance.
