"I had an outdoor playground set. Adrian was professional and hard-working. Great communication and he brought all the required tools and equipment. He showed up first thing in the morning on a short notice and it was all done before the end of the day. The assembly looks great and I know the kids will love it!"

"Enrique responded promptly to our request for an estimate. After ordering and receiving the materials, he and Hubert began work immediately, removed the existing deck, installed concrete supports, built the framing and installed the deck. The project was completed in just over two days. Enrique is experienced in working with Trex decking, our choice of material, and the finished deck is beautiful. All trash was removed and the work area cleaned perfectly. Enrique is very professional in his approach to us and in all aspects of the work. We plan to hire him to rebuild a fence."

Small jobs welcome

"My initial submission for a bid was answered with a call the same day in which we arranged a time to walk the project. That happened on a Friday morning. Friday afternoon I received and acceptable bid. Saturday the contract was signed. Sunday a confirmation call was received. Monday the work was done. Tuesday remaining materials were picked up. The experience was efficient, clean and professional ."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.
