"We are so happy with the service we received from Arie and his crew. We hired Arie to repair and waterproof our existing cantilever deck. We also wanted to add a completely new railing. First and foremost, Arie could not be nicer. He was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. He walked us through the entire process step by step so that we fully understood what the repairs and waterproofing would entail. We originally spoke with Arie in January but ultimately we decided to delay the project because of the pandemic. When we were ready to start the project, we got back in touch with Arie and he was so accommodating. He met every expectation we had. He provided a great price for the entire project and stuck with the original price estimate even though the cost of materials had increased since we received our original estimate. His staff was extremely professional and the deck is absolutely beautiful. They were able to finish their work faster than they anticipated. Before Arie, we rarely used the space because it was in such bad shape and so in need of repair. The new deck has completely transformed our view. Now, we are outside enjoying it all the time, and just looking through the windows outside to the deck is wonderful. We're so grateful that we found iDeck and Arie. I sincerely doubt there is another company out there that can provide the quality, craftsmanship and customer service that Arie and his staff from iDeck provide. We highly recommend iDeck for your project!"

"This is a lot of references rolled into one. Mitch from The Carpet Store in Sylmar certainly doesn’t have a glossy showroom, but has everything, is a good person and works with a lot of contractors. When I asked for a reference, Mitch said that flooring is the last step on a lot of renovation jobs. The contractor he doesn’t hear complaints about is Tony of TME. I also checked Houzz and the other websites and they say the same thing that I’m saying here. If you can, work with TME. Tony is a human buzz saw. He is always there, works hard, fast, meticulously and at a reasonable cost. That is just great but there is more. It was fun to work with Tony. (His sense of humor can be a real groaner, but, much as I hate to admit it, I’m still smiling.) He is honest, genuinely cares about what you want, the quality of the work and the schedule. He brought in a group of workers who were a pleasure to have in the house and who had been with him for years. I also recommend using his advice. He is smart and experienced and has a very good eye about what is going to work and look good. I had a complicated project. Work was needed on damage from past leaks, mold checking (a science in its own right) and 2 1/2 bathroom remodels. He did everything meticulously to code. The results were just beautiful. Tony became a friend, and I will certainly keep working with him."

"We decided to install an outdoor kitchen and needed a solid base. The crew created a large concrete slab that measured around 400 sq. ft. They first excavated, installed a compacted gravel base, and added rebar before framing everything out. Drainage slope was included so water doesn't pool, and they ensured utilities could run through conduit before the pour. The slab was finished with a smooth surface since it will later be tiled. Permits were pulled in advance, and city inspectors signed off at every stage. The process took a few weeks, and the space is now ready for the kitchen installation. The precision in layout and attention to detail stood out to me. It feels like we've got a reliable foundation for years of outdoor use."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
