"At first, I thought this would be a simple one-hour job. However, after the new door was installed, the opening was slightly different, which made the paver installation more challenging and time-consuming than expected. They took the time to carefully cut and fit the existing bricks so they would match and fit as well as possible. What seemed like a small project ended up requiring two trips and about four hours to complete. I truly appreciate their patience, attention to detail, and dedication to doing the job right, even for a small project. The finished result looks great, and I'm very grateful for their help, especially since several other companies were not interested in taking on such a small job."

"From the first call until the completion of the job(s) Skill Set has made my life easier. I am newer to the area and purchased my home almost 2 years ago. The house is 19 years old so things break, need updating, or a fresh coat of paint. It has been so easy working with Skill Set. Always friendly, on time, fair pricing and jobs completed quickly. Skill Set is and will remain my first call when I need things done. ? Trusted!"

Customers say: True professional

"Paul and his team did a brilliant job extending my back porch roof. The results is seamless! You cannot tell were the addition starts and the old roof ends. I have also used them to repair one of the beams in my front porch roof. Again, seamless work. They are always on time and clean up after themselves. Attached are before and after porch extension I would highly recommend them."

"I recently had the pleasure of working with Daniel, a contractor who exceeded all my expectations. He completed my kitchen backsplash, installed a bathroom vanity, and repaired a drywall seam between my living room and kitchen. Each task was executed with precision and attention to detail, showcasing his exceptional craftsmanship. Daniel's professionalism and commitment to quality were evident from start to finish. He was punctual, communicated clearly, and left the workspace immaculate every day. The kitchen backsplash looks stunning, the bathroom vanity is flawlessly installed, and the drywall repair is seamless—it's like the damage was never there. If you're considering hiring a contractor, I highly recommend Daniel. You won't be disappointed. We are moving into a turn-key home, but we will definitely retain Daniel's contact information for any future projects. Thank you, Daniel, for your outstanding work and dedication to being apart of helping us sell our home!"

"Russ Hendrickson is capable, reliable, courteous and fair. He knows how to build and reface cabinets! He did exactly what I asked him to do and he was good about pointing out issues to consider (or re-consider!). He communicated frequently with me throughout the project. He pays attention to detail and cleans up after his work. I'd absolutely hire him again."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.
