"We had several towel rails that needed to be fixed as they had become loose over the years. Pablo from Skillset came out and was able to fix them right then. He was very efficient and pleasant to have around and we were very pleased with the result. The job was completed at a very reasonable cost and we would definitely hire again."

Customers say: True professional

"We hired East Valley side job to replace the fascia on our house. Paul came out to give us an estimate and we liked the price and him enough to accept the bid without pricing it out with anyone else - which I rarely do. He sent his foreman Cale to head the project. He and his crew were professional, friendly and meticulous. They cleaned up thoroughly after each day on the job and did great work. We will definitely hire them for more jobs."

"Henry and his team are wonderful to work with. They communicate well, explain what and why as well as show up when they say they will. Their work is top notch. They do more than framing as our project required many different skills. They did them all well."

Customers say: Quick response

"Daniel called me the day after I put in my crown molding job on Home Advisor and came out two days later to give me a bid. I hired him after his bid was half that of another I had received. He was prompt and on time for both the bid and the actual job. His crew was courteous and professional and the job was done within the time frame he gave me. The only glitch was we had a miscommunication about painting the crown molding. I thought we discussed that they would caulk and fill in the nail holes and paint, however, the painting was not included. I should have been more clear with my expectations- I'm a newbie at this. However, the work that was done was good and fast and affordable."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.
