A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. To find that load, you should call a local electrical pro.

Moving an outlet usually costs between $25 and $300. The amount you'll pay depends on the type of outlet and the condition of the walls in your home. Exposed walls without drywall and insulation are the easiest for electricians to work on, but finished walls that will require repair afterward can drive up the cost.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

You can install a three-prong outlet without connecting any ground and plug in three-prong electronics into that outlet. The devices will function normally, but you won’t get any of the protection that grounding provides, so there’s an increased risk of serious problems if something goes wrong.

Technically, an outdoor outlet can be on the same circuit as an indoor outlet, but it's generally not recommended. Outdoor outlets should ideally be on a dedicated circuit that doesn't share power with other indoor or outdoor outlets. This helps ensure that the outdoor outlets are able to handle the additional electrical load without overloading the circuit. Additionally, outdoor outlets are often exposed to the elements, which can increase the risk of electrical shock and other hazards.
