"These guys are so good I tell you they don't miss a lick. I was so so relieved when they came and took over my job because they knew exactly what to do when to do it where to do it and better yet how to do it. C h a n e the owner is absolutely the nicest guy polite kind considerate to your needs and is certain to get the job done before you pay a dime his health is also very respectful everyone has their personal niche that they do and they all do it 110% with a great attitude a smile on their face and you just keep adding stuff you want done to your house because you see how good is getting done no way do they have measures anything everything is done with extraordinary care and pride in their work I could go on and on and on but the best way you can know what's true and what's not is to hire them you absolutely will not be disappointed not one bit they're the best group of people I've ever had work for me one knows what the other one needs when he needs it they work well together they work well with you there or without you there I just can't say enough about these guys in the work performance that they show the workmanship is phenomenal I would hire them today if I could think of one more thing left to do at my house however I think they about covered it for now I will be adding a garage later and they will be doing it I can assure you that. As far as I'm concerned no one will ever touch my house again other than them they put everyone else to shame I thank God I found them I thank God they all are seriously fit kind considerate clean and professional. I would hire these guys to do anything for me and I suggest to you if you're starting finishing or in between a job you need to stop and let these guys take over you will not be disappointed that I can assure you. They aim to please and they do I thank you to all the crew from Double Down construction and I just appreciate so much the work you did on my home it's absolutely beautiful thank you chane and all your guys if you ever need a reference you give me a call tell tell them to give me a call LOL you should be very proud of yourselves because you are very very good at what you do which was everything I used them for so many different things they're not all listed about but anything they touch is going to be done 110 percent again thanks guys see you soon!!!!!!?"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The two most common drywall thicknesses for ceilings are 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch. For most standard residential applications, 1/2-inch drywall is sufficient and widely used. It provides adequate support and is lighter and easier to handle during installation compared to thicker sheets. However, 5/8-inch drywall is often used for specific cases where additional benefits are needed. It is heavier but provides superior sound dampening and fire resistance. You should consider using 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings in commercial buildings, between a garage and a living space, or above a finished basement to meet building codes or for enhanced soundproofing.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.

Options include bricks, natural stone, and concrete blocks. Choose based on durability, aesthetics, and budget.

Drywall can be installed directly on ceiling joists. In fact, this method is common in many construction projects. Drywall sheets are attached to the joists using screws, ensuring a secure and stable installation. Before attaching the drywall, it's important to mark the joist locations on the ceiling, allowing for accurate screw placement. Proper spacing between screws and careful taping and mudding of joints are crucial to creating a smooth and flawless ceiling surface. If the joists are in good condition and level, installing drywall directly on them is a practical and efficient approach.

You do not need to drywall over most types of garage insulation. However, doing so can increase noise reduction, make the space more attractive, and keep children and pets from touching harmful fiberglass insulation. If you’re using cellulose or some other type of blown-in insulation (fiberglass and mineral wool are common), you will need drywall to contain the insulation material.
