You can walk on a TPO roof, but you should only do so when necessary and wear footwear that’s less likely to puncture the surface. TPO roofing can also be slippery, so in most cases, you’ll want to leave walking on it to the pros.

The best way to prevent wind damage to your roof, especially if you live in an area prone to hurricanes, tropical storms, or tornadoes, is to invest in a roofing product with high wind resistance. Look for the ASTM D3161 and ASTM D7158 ratings to see the specific wind speeds your roofing product can withstand. Impact-resistant shingles have the highest wind resistance ratings and will give you the best chance of avoiding wind damage.

While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. If recycling isn't available, your roofing contractor may recommend renting a dumpster, if your project is on the large side, or collecting the shingles in contractor bags to throw them away. Another option may be to donate new or gently used shingles to a local nonprofit.

A gambrel roof and a mansard roof are similar in that they are both hipped roofs, meaning they have double slopes—one steep and one more gradual above the steep slope. The difference is that a gambrel roof has a double slope on only two sides of the structure, whereas a mansard roof has a double slope on all four sides.
