Customers say: True professional

"Arrived promptly this morning after I called after 5:30 PM yesterday.  Called on way over so I would know when he would arrive.  Went right to work.  Tested all and examined all the wall receptacles.  Identified all the things that needed replacement.  Don't have any idea if the cost was reasonable.   The cost was $211.46.  I feel he saved my life and property to keep it from burning down the house.

"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"I was traveling for work and my personal laptop was running very slow. I called Greyt PC and was able to get it looked at the same day. The customer service was top-notch. I really appreciated the owner making me a priority. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. He explained things to me and helped me understand the issue. Since then my laptop has been running great."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, blue wires can be hot wires in the U.S. However, they are less common in residential properties than red and black hot wires. Blue wires are typically used as traveler wires in three-way and four-way switches, as well as ceiling fans. They allow fixtures to be controlled by multiple switches, like when there are switches at the top and bottom of a staircase for the same light.

Local building codes typically require conduit around exterior wiring. Conduit protects the wire from moisture, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, and harsh weather conditions to prolong its lifespan. When a wire is worn out, it can be dangerous as the risk of electric shock or fire increases.

It’s important to ask an electrician a few questions before you commit to hiring them so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. If you’re getting estimates or considering hiring an electrician, ask them these questions:

  • Are you a full-time electrician?

  • Are you bonded, licensed, and insured?

  • What level of experience do you have as an electrician?

  • Can you please share three references?

  • Do you do residential or commercial electrical work?

  • What kinds of electrical work are you most familiar with?

  • Will any subcontractors be performing the work?

  • Are permits and inspections required?

  • Who is responsible for obtaining permits and inspections?

  • What is your schedule?

  • Do you offer a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Will you sign a do-not-exceed clause to keep the job within the budget?

Single switch installs are quick DIY projects, but you should consider enlisting the help of a pro for more complicated replacements—like a smart switch or if you live in an older home with outdated wiring. Professional electricians are trained in the latest code regulations. They are also insured, licensed, and bonded.

The common, marked as COM or C, is one of the terminals found in your light switch. It houses the live wire that supplies the input voltage. The other terminals, marked as L1 or L2, are the outputs to the light fixtures. Depending on if you have a one-way or two-way switch, you’ll either have just an L1 terminal or both an L1 and L2 terminal.
