Small jobs welcome

"Hired Lovell Constrction to build a stand alone deck on a steep slope; a difficult project given the terrain and physical movement of building materials from the staging area to the job site. The project was completed quickly, thoroughly and professionally. Craftsmanship and work ethics are second to none. Exceeded expectations and standards expected. Plan to use again and refer to others for quality work needs."

Small jobs welcome

"Chris did a great job on my decks. It was a very difficult job as it was a rebuild from the existing deck. The deck is high, and it was attached to my roof. It was a project that required a great deal of planning and skill. Chris also had to work during the extreme heat and the job was very labor intense. I love the decks! Chris did an exceptional job and stayed on budget. He also is always pleasant and communicates well. He kept me updated throughout the project, so I always knew what to expect. I would highly recommend Chris!"

"Jeremiah and team did a terrific job on our new hot tub deck. The project was complex as it needed to be built on the slope, tie into the house, and support a large hot tub with gazebo. Jeremiah listened well and contributed helpful ideas to make the overall design better. The price was very competitive, with documented bids and invoices. The construction team showed up on time and cleaned up after themselves daily. We liked them so much that we hired them for another job right after. I would recommend hiring Jeremiah and his team."

"They did a good job. I was just hoping it would stop my wood floors from creaking but they are worse. Overall believe the work done will be good for the house support though"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.
