Contact us at (888) 991-4221 in Owens Cross Roads, AL, to learn more about a local HVAC contractor.

"Had a late service call ($225) and worker inspected system—no air coming from vents. He came inside saw no air forced air and went outside and into the attic. First said, "No problems," next, "Needs a new fan motor," next I suggested he check the fan capacitor--he confirmed a low amperage, and replace the $15-30 part. Total cost: $325. 13 days later, same problem. Asked for a refund of just the service call because we weren't satisfied and didn't trust them to fix it. Manger declined, "Saying during 14 days anything could happen. Another, less expensive company diagnosed and replaced the defective blower for less than the Durham Service Company's work."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

If you suspect a broken gas line in your home, turn the gas off at the mains and call a nearby emergency plumber. Don't attempt to fix it yourself, and don't use anything that could cause a flame or a spark. Your pro has the tools and experience to safely repair the gas line.

A plumber or certified gas technician is responsible for capping gas lines. Gas lines require expertise and understanding of safety standards to ensure it’s properly sealed. Your local regulations may also have specific requirements for capping gas lines.

Natural gas companies advise only shutting off the gas supply at the meter yourself if you smell natural gas or suspect there is a leak, typically following an emergency. Instead, you can shut off gas to individual appliances when necessary. If you want to turn off your natural gas entirely, you should contact your utility company. You’ll generally also need to acquire a permit to work on your natural gas line.

Any gas pipe can leak, especially if it’s old or isn’t properly maintained. However, even with a shovel, plastic pipes are more easily damaged by impact. That’s why it’s so important to have gas lines marked by the utility company before you begin digging for any reason. Some metal pipes, like black pipes, galvanized steel, and copper, aren’t as easily damaged by impact but can degrade over the years, leading to leaks.

The right way to vent a gas water heater is to have a pipe directly upward or slopes upward out of the house. Because hot air naturally rises, this type of venting will efficiently ensure that all gas moves out of the house. Your system may rely on fans or blowers as well.
